All of the major scoring systems are based on a system that rewards symmetry, and penalizes a rack for many of the points that hunters love (such as droptines, split tines etc). JMbuckhunter for example, many times I have heard him say how much he wants a droptine buck... That is a buck that many guys would love to have on their wall. This is also a buck that most of the scoring orgs. penalize. I for one could not care less what an animals net score is. To me it is not about attaining a "higher" score as many purists claim. It's about giving the animal credit for what he has, not deducting for character. If I never hear a net score again... I would be fine with that. What say you?
This is like asking everyone across the country......their opinions on snow blowers. I don't give a rat's ass about net scores. And, the longer I hunt......the less I care about gross.
I do not necessarily care about gross score either. If I decide an animal "does it" for me, I do want to know what the score is afterward but could not care less what the actual score is. Hope that makes sence. *To add* I have no idea what your analogy means.
I think the whole scoring system is silly, myself. I agree with you completely. BTW...I don't see this being that much of a debate. Who in their right mind would defend a scoring system where a buck's rack is penalized for growing "bone" the wrong way or asymmetrically ?
Whatever, I shoot what I want to shoot. I have some guidelines based on scoring systems and I do enter things in P&Y but it's me who is the only judge that counts to me.
Scott: My point was....Outside of a few select areas of the country, I'm betting you don't realize how little people care about ANY scoring system.
In the words of our new found hero..... hunlee "Shooting tomorrows trophys today!" Who cares, if ya shoot a buck you must of wanted to for some reason or another not matter the score!
I (for fun and for record's sake) score every buck we kill at our camp. I haven't and don't ever plan on deducting anything from an animal. I feel the same as you Buckeye.
Score what he grows... for example, we green scored my brothers buck at 205 gross non-typicle (which doesnt even exist technically lol), but im sure he nets somewhere in the 180's
Oh...the horror!....lol You guys who live in the various "Mecca's" have to understand how meaningless this kinda stuff is to most hunters. Don't you?
Im just a by-product of my environment :D (seriously) Jeff, a 160" here is just like a 110" there, im sure both of us aren't passing giving the oppurtunity....and we both know a couple exist
This buck here is the perfect example for me: His score sheet would be filled with all sorts of deductions. He is just a cool looking buck that I have grown to like. No doubt about it that I would be very pleased to tag him. I would say that at some point this year, it really hit me for the first time that the score of a rack isn't everything for a buck. Net score means nothing to me. I will pay attention to gross, but I don't understand the logic in penalizing a set of antlers for one tine being an inch longer than the other, and so on.
I have not been in the big buck game for long in terms of understanding scoring, etc. However, I could care less about deductions. Let a buck be what he is and use gross score.
Personally I dont care about the Net either. Gross is wehere its all about anyway giving credit for whats actually there My buck will certainly not Net book as a typical but thats ok, he still looks awesome on the wall with what he has
I agree that scoring a buck based on what he grows is the way to go. The net scores are what are required to join the clubs. Those are their requirements. I know P&Y have done a tremendous amount for bowhunting, but I don't care much at all about their net scoring system.
