I have never used a decoy and i was wondering what you guys think is the best. i have looked at alot of them and i have no clue i dont want to spend my money on something that is a peace of junk. liveing in west virginia we dont have that many big bucks so i was also wondering if it would be better just to get a doe or both. any thing would help
I have never used one either, but from what I have seen on shows and discussed with other hunters that do use them, they do work. A guy I was talking to yesterday said that he stores his in the backyard and there is a 10 point that keeps messing with it when he isn't home. The fuzzy one that Primos (I think) just came out with looks very realistic. It was $99 at Gander Mountain. Sal
I myself had no experience with decoys til this year. I bought the scarface by primos from walmart last spring for 50 bucks. I knew I would be able to try it out in kansas this year. The second time I used it I had a nice nine pointer come and sniff it and I drilled him. I am sold on the use of the decoy, in the midwest anyway. Here is the thread with a picture of the decoy in it. http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=17093
I like my carry lite decoy. It comes with the antlers and if you remove them it has caps to put in the antler holes to make it a doe. Where I am from we don't have a high number of bucks but every time I have had it out the does see it and come right in. It seems to put them at ease when entering a field. They come in earlier so hopefully the bucks will be close behind and come out earlier also.
I just had success with a decoy. I was using it in a heavy rub area, with two mock scrapes . I was told, on this forum, (thankyou), to put my decoy, slightly facing me and that MOST of the time, the deer will come to its face first. If it does that, it gives you a quartering away shot. He came out of a thick area to a doe bleat, (the can), looked around, saw the decoy, and came straight in, the problem it presented, was my stand was in between the both, and he walked straight to me, as he turned, in front of my stand I shot, my arrow passed through, and was in the ground 8 ft. from my stand. To your ques., I also wanted a decoy, so I took my 3d target out, to try it and sprayed my area with urine. I had taken the horns off, and used my own logic in thinking, I have a doe decoy, use a doe call, and use doe in estrus around the decoy and on her backside. I want to get a lighter decoy, but it was very exciting to have a plan, and make it work. I think if it were earlier in the rut, I might have left the horns on, used buck, or a tarsal type urine, and a buck call or maybe rattles. I would think I upped the odds by keeping all the variables together. Good luckl Mike
