Anybody had any luck using them this time of year? I haven't used one enough to know that much about them. I've been hunting a bean field and seeing deer almost every sit. My problem is I'm only allowed to hunt a small part of the field and the deer like the other part better. Has anyone had good results using a decoy this time of the season? And do you use a buck or doe decoy?
Use a doe decoy and place it up wind about 30 yards or so because the deer will circle around it to see what it is.
They are setting pecking order. A new buck seems to interest them. It won't hurt. Early season decoying is under rated.
Myself and a hunting buddy of mine have both had some success using buck decoys during the early season. We use them on large ag fields where getting close to the deer can be difficult. A buck decoy can make another buck curious and want to come over to inspect the "new guy". Some non aggressive grunts may also be effective at drawing them in if they don't seem interested initially. I killed an 8 pointer the very first time I tried this on a field I had never hunted before.
I would definetly use one if you are limited on the amount of field you can hunt. Sometimes I like to only put one side of the horns on. Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you.
