Which type of decoy have you had luck with? Buck decoy? Doe? Also, has anyone had luck with the 2D type? (Renzo type)
I recently had my first experience with a decoy. I used a Carrylite and made him into a doe last week. I had a 5 point come in the far end of my 2.5 acre plot and then come down to my end and "check" her out. He swung on my side (her rear) to check her out and presented a great shot. He just wasn't the buck I wanted. Cool stuff, I will be decoying more next year. Good luck Christine.
Had luck on 2 occasions with a ready doe decoy. Surprisingly enough it was with other doe. One was working downwind but the doe easily came across a field over 100 yards to get a closer look. My boss buck I have yet to see a buck with it out yet. I will be trying this weekend again.
I have a renzo buck decoy that is still in the plastic bag. I want to try him out but everytime I take him it gets windy as heck and he'd blow away. Deb may let me borrow her renzo doe. I'm curious how they'll work. I've been out a couple times this year where a decoy may have really helped. Maybe. I'm thinking I'll need to put the 2d decoys someplace where the deer won't get to the thin side and freak out. Maybe put it so the front is at a tree and the backend is up to some brambles?
Christine it matters on the buck and it is only a guess at best, Steve and I started out using a buck decoy then all of sudden it quit working we switched to a doe and that is when lets just say the magic happened and the 170 10pt came in after a 115 7pt was there. Then we used it as a doe untill Steve saw the 170 running a doe up and down the field and ignoring his doe decoy so he climbed down with a 1/2 hr of light all on film and put the antlers on and then rattled and shot his 8pt coming in to kick his decoy buck butt.. So it all depends on the buck at that time guess and guess wrong and you end up like me with a170 standing 60yards stomping at my doe decoy and then walking away into the sunset!!Walt
Christine..I had the renzo 2d feeding doe, I picked up at a garage sale. I used it a few times and had some "success" with other doe. They would walk up to it and virtually touch it and then run off 15 yards and then do it again. It was laughable. I read a tip to put some white on it's tail area that moved and used a paper towel folded like a tail. That seemed to make it more realistic, but like you say once they get up on it and it disappears they got curioulsy nervous. I would like to get a real 3D buck and try it out. I like the one with the bobble head (scar-face) I think is the name. It would be fun, thats for sure.
I used a doe decoy on the only buck I shot. This time of year a buck decoy may backfire. They may be tired of fighting. I've also been told to remove one antler making your decoy look more vulnerable.
I have had a Blue Ridge 3D target/decoy for a couple of years and have never used it. I took it to deer camp this year, but have yet to use it. I may give it a try this weekend.
I have more luck with the doe decoy. I use a buck in late October and then take the antlers off it and use it as a doe in November.
I usually use my decoy as a buck - with only one side of the rack on to make it a little less intimidating.
I have had great luck this year with my carrylite decoy. I tried both buck and doe and had better luck with the doe (so far).
Christine I was down in southern Illinois between the two gun seasons and I used the buck decoy with the doe at it's feet laying down and have a great 8pt running in to them all on film. Wont spoil what happened but I didn't shot him!!!! That was the first time I ran decoys and boy did it work!! I had the scareface bobble head as a buck and that cheap foam one not sure of the name laying down as a doe.. Walt
