As many of you sit at home b/c your season is over, here in Va we are still going...my bowhunting in December has been a revelation to me...I have been gun hunting at the club with the group and dogs and it's fun, but I only go on Saturdays for that, it's an old Va tradition I grew up doing, but i put zero effort in it, you can't it's all pot luck...but my bowhunting has been great...I have passed exactly 4 bucks since Nov 15th....it is now Dec 13 and I have taken 2 does with a bow since the gun season opened and still have been seeing deer on a regular basis...even the bucks are moving...I think I like Dec bowhunting more than the rut to be honest....I believe the puzzle is coming together for me and I think it's b/c I have been dedicated to bowhunting this December like never before. I really believe this whole season has been the most useful and invaluable seaon in all my yrs hunting...
I'm torn on this, Landon. Call me a softy, but with the weather we've been having here in PA lately, I'm glad I'm not on stand. I get cold extremely easy, so it's tough for me to get pumped about "late" season hunting here.:D
I hear ya, we are in Va and it doesn't get cold here like it does there in PA...I mean it was cold to us this week with highs in the low 40s!!
Yeah, it's not that I don't enjoy winter and being out in the cold, it's just being STATIONARY in the cold that I don't like. I do love how quiet the woods can get after a late-season snowfall, though. Very special.
Late bow season starts tomorrow in NYS I can't wait.I got one with the bow in early season, nothing with the gun.I hope to get another with the bow.
good luck to all late season bow hunters!! it takes a special hunter to hunt this time of year let alone take a deer...any deer!!
I look forward to this time of year, just didn't plan on still having a buck tag. I purposely held on to a doe tag for late season. That's not to say it can't be rough sometimes. Friday night, Rob came out with me and we were on the East side of a 40 acre field with 30 mph West winds. It wasn't pretty, but in the end we just laughed at ourselves, two knuckleheads in a tree hanging on to the season.
I really think Decmeber is the best month to learn your land and deer herd...everything gets condensed....the bedding areas become more obvious as well as the food and the routes they used to get there...
I don't care for late season hunting either for the same reason MGH stated. I had back surgery 10 years ago, and since that it's been brutal trying to keep my feet warm. The late season here in WI can get VERY ugly being we woke up to almost 18" of snow Wednesday morning this week and then Thurs. morning it was -5 straight temp with a 15-20 mph wind making the wind chills just plain UGLY! I'm still trying to hunt, but now the walk into the farm starts a quarter mile longer being we can't get past the gate now so yeah...IT BLOWS!
I'm giving this December hunting a shot this year. I'm usually done with the freezer filled after the gun seasons, but not this year. I saw a good buck early in the month, and a small one last night, but other than that nothing has been moving for me. Hopefully they are still trying to get settled down from the orange army chasing them around.
well to show you how it can be tough.....the last 3 sits have produced squat! nothing!! but that's what makes seeing them sooo much better when ya do!
I love December hunting. The last three weeks have been extremely tough for me in terms of hunting time. I will be going out on my first December hunt tomorrow afternoon. I am just excited to get into the woods and sit, far away from the hustle and bustle that IS life here in Northern VA.
