This x eleventybillion!!! I don't think Cutler is going to be with the bears next season. McCown proved that a quarterback with a firm grasp of the playbook and moderate skill can make Tressman's offense work so there really is no reason to pay top ten QB money for a suspect QB that may not be the best option long term. I agree that Washington's defense is really bad but if the offense can stay healthy, they should be successful. As far as the defense goes, that is the primary problem with our team, not Cutler. We have 2 defensive leaders out, Shea McClelin who isn't worth a crap as a defensive end in a 4-3 defense, Julius Peppers who just plain ol aint worth the 14 million he's getting and needs to be dropped like a bad habit, and Chris Conte who is a back-up safety in a starting position. He gets burnt in man coverage 80 percent of the time!! Our defense needs DESPERATE help!! I don't know if Mel Tucker will have a job if this continues thru the rest of the season, especially after Briggs comes back.
I keep reading ( both here and the pundits) say that they doubt Cutler will be a Bear next season. In this age of football, do you really release (or trade) a QB of his talent? Not likely, my monies on a multiyear contract in this off season. He'll retire a Bear Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Nah. Trestman is way smarter than that. You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't produce, and look like you will produce in the long term, Trestman will not give you a long term contract. Even if Cutler does come back in a month, you don't completely heal from a groin tear in that short amount of time so management has to consider the long term ramifications of that. They'd be smarter to bring a young, skilled QB in and mold him into something that will perfectly fit there offensive scheme for the long term AND not have to pay him top 10 QB money.
The offense has looked pretty good this year, outside of a couple of bad halves. The problem this year is that the defense has been gashed and that was an issue before half the defense was out with some type of injury. I like Cutler and I think he gives the Bears the best chance to win. McCown may be good for a game or two, but he doesn't have the arm that Cutler does and you aren't going to win any shootouts with McCown behind center.
Yes but wouldn't it be smarter to do that while Cutler is still there? Afterall there are plenty of first round QB's that look good on scouting reports and combines but turn out to be duds once they get to the NFL.
First of all, BJE80, that is friggen HILARIOUS!!! lol!! Cutler has some bad habits that I would like to avoid exposing a new blank-slate QB to like getting flustered in the pocket and forcing passes to Marshall because he's basically become Cutler's crutch. Plus, they would still have to pay Cutler and the new QB while already dealing with the salary cap issues we have now. Once Peppers goes away, that will definitely help. There just aren't any quality QBs available right now so we'll have to stick it out with Cutler for the rest of this season, hopefully not resign him to anything significantly long term, and move on from there.
I'd be interested to see what kind of money he is going to be asking at the end of the season. $10 mil a year?
I think $10 mil a year is in the ballpark of where he's gonna wanna be. That's gonna add up quickly since he's gonna want a long term contract.
