David Stern asks Jim Rome, ‘Have you stopped beating your wife yet?’ in response to lottery-fixing question in radio interview Instead of posting the whole exchange I'll post the lead up to the Stern's question. Yet for a man in Stern's position it was tacky and low-brow. And for a commissioner to respond in such a manner of this man's family life be it true or not shows the direction of the NBA and his idealism to control the behavior of those over paid Jock Strap Diva's. ....You know, New Orleans won the draft lottery, which, of course, produced the usual round of speculation that maybe the lottery was fixed," Rome said. "I know that you appreciate a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy — was the fix in for the lottery?" "Uh, you know, I have two answers for that," Stern said. "I'll give you the easy one — no — and a statement: Shame on you for asking." "You know, I understand why you would say that to me, and I wanted to preface it by saying it respectfully," Rome replied. "I think it's my job to ask, because I think people wonder." "No, it's ridiculous," Stern answered. "But that's OK." "I know that you think it's ridiculous, but I don't think the question is ridiculous, because I know people think that," Rome said. "I'm not saying that I do, but I think it's my job to ask you that." "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" Stern asked. "Yeah, I don't know if that's fair," Rome responded. "I don't know that that's fair." "Well, why's that?" Stern asked. "Because I think that there are — and I know you read your emails and I'm sure you follow things virally on Twitter — people really do think it, whether it's fair or not," Rome said. "You don't think the question's fair to ask if your fans think it?"
I dont like Jim Rome (like Pat likes to say I think he is a d bag) but I believe more people than not think the NBA draft lottery is a JOKE! Stern getting asked a legit sports question and he goes there is ridiculus. You know it is bad when Bud Selig thinks how does this guy keep his job
It wasn't really an accusation. He was throwing the same type of question as an analogy with zero proof about anything.
^ This....Stern simply asked a loaded question of Rome, he was not accusing him of spousal abuse. This whole exchange has been overblown. These two have contentious conversations just about every time they talk.
Loaded or not the question Stern posed is nothing to take lightly. I would never pose a question of that nature to anyone unless the conversation is directed in the contents it would be perceived. Further if that's the best Stern has then that's the reason why NBA and other sports entity's behave the way they do.
Rome asking if the lottery was fixed was not appropriate to begin with so I have no problem with how Stern handled it. Anyone with any sense realizes what Stern was doing. As I said before....OVERBLOWN!
David Stern should be ashamed of himself. He needs to issue an apology to Jim Rome immediately. I don't like Jim Rome, but accusing him like that, regardless if it was a rhetorical question or not is over the line.
