So my buddy calls me last night breathing so hard I can't understand him. He just shot the buck he's been after all year. I ask him if I need to bring lights over and he says no. He isn't sure of the shot and wants to let it lay over night. So we wake up at 7 this morning to go out to look for him. After finding very little blood this is what we find 70 yards from his stand

Very nice heavy 9 point. He made a better shot than what he thought. From 6:30 last night to 7:30 this morning those coyotes did some damage. He was sick as you could imagine. Anyone else ever seen this? This was my first time seeing that especially so quick.

Thats terrible. Beautiful buck, however, congrats to your buddy. We have coyotes out west here, just not in legions like you guys.

Is the hole in the ribcage his entrance/exit hole?

Wow!! I've seen where they get the rear-end or hind-quarter but that is some serious damage done.. Must've brought a lot of friends to dinner!!

That's the entrance whole. The arrow didn't go all the way through and half the arrow was still in the buck. They had everything tore up. Zero meat left. He was a beautiful buck though. There had to be 6 or 8 of them I would say.

That is a shame. Your friend did everything right by backing out and not pushing a deer when he wasn't sure about the shot. Then to find the deer only 13 hours later completely eaten. Doesn't seem like the proper reward for him. Congrats on a great buck nonetheless...

He is sick over it! I don't blame him. I was and it wasn't even my deer. He had this buck patterned and told me that buck is coming in the evening. And he did. Sucks. I told him were taking the AR and the fox pro in the after season is over. Time for some cleaning!

I can feel for you and your friend. A friend of mine arrowed a buck that he had 3 years of history with and found him the next morning half eaten by coyotes. I helped track the night before but had to work the morning they found it. He was relieved he found it but absolutely sick as well. His buck netted 201 3/8".

It's the year of the coyote or something. I'm sick of em.

Leaving a deer overnight here is not an option if it's for the meat. 2 seasons ago I shot a doe close to the opener. Was cool enough to let her lay, knew it was a good shot. Switched stands to try and fill another tag but they were just out of range. Went to recover the doe an hour and a half later and coyotes had already torn her open and ate a rear quarter.

Sad to say, but unless it's a buck it's pretty much pointless to try a recovery the next day here. I'll still look but 95% of the time it's not salvageable.

Sucks what happened to your friend, maybe he can get a cape for it if he wanted a mount.

It's very hard to do but I've always suggested that if you're worried about coyotes, just sit down at the last blood (wind acceptable) and listen... if the deer is down and the coyotes are on it, you'll find the deer... if the deer is not down, the coyotes may give you a direction plus, they are going to push your animal anyway... coyotes make a woods interesting. We had a pack circling us when we were blood trailing a doe, we knew she'd be close because they were on the scene...

That sucks!!! There are coyotes in the area I hunt. I saw 3 out in the open last year after blowing a fawn bleat and one even walked up immediately under my stand. Saw one about 10 to 15 yards away from me a few days ago when I went out to check a trail cam. Watched it walk into the woods and kick up a deer. I've already filled my tag this year and coyote season opened about 3 weeks ago. No restriction on firearms for them, so I'm taking my brother's AR-15 out tomorrow and possibly Sunday, along with a distressed rabbit call, to hopefully get rid of a few coyotes.
