I was just informed today that a doe I shot in November tested positive for CWD. Usually the DNR just send me a postcard telling me of a negative test result. Today they left me a voice mail to call them. I knew it was going to be bad news. I was advised (which I already knew) the possible "unknown" factors in eating meat from a positive test and how to dispose of the meat should I choose not to eat. I have yet to eat any meat from this deer and will throw it away. They are still in the middle of testing and they couldn't tell me how many tested positive in WI this year. I was told prior to this year that eight positive tests came within 1/2 mile of the land I hunt and that included one positive deer from the land in 2008. That being said what would your choice be? Eat or Not??
So how many deer do you guys think are eaten every year that had CDW and the harvester never knew it? Better just stop hunting guys...
I have lived and hunted in the core area of CWD (Barneveld- Sauk City, WI) for the last 18 years. I have eaten from probably hundreds of deer shot within this area. I have never worried about it one bit. I'd be more worried about whats in the mystery meat at McDonalds than fresh venison CWD or not.
I saw something about this earlier this fall. If ya just cook it to a certain temp it won't hurt ya. Been sitting here for last half hour trying to find it but having no luck. I wouldn't worry about it, if you are why even go hunting? You won't know until after ya kill it if it had CWD so no real point in goin, can throw it in a ditch I guess.
we are in the south east corner of the state... the DNR used to test Every deer killed... now you have to request a test ... we've eaten every deer we harvested since the CWD scare... I haven't let it bother me ...
pretty interesting read... Chronic Wasting Disease : Chronic Wasting Disease: Frequently Asked Questions http://www.agr.state.il.us/AnimalHW/cwd/processing.html Prion's haven't been found in muscle tissue ...
Yeah I believe it is only in neural tissue and fluids, like the spine and brain. I know from what I have read they always warn about puncturing these areas and releasing any fluid. However, it would be a little uncomfortable eating deer known to have CWD. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
I was going to say the same, but I came across your post! But, I wouldn't eat it when I knew the deer tested positive!
