Like some of the others on here I dont believe in culling, especially when you're dealing with free range whitetails. The genetics are already in the herd, so "culling" might make you feel better but in the end it was pointless. Having said that, I would let him go and see if he makes it another year. I personally love bucks with some kind of characteristic to their antlers that sets them apart from the rest. He could go back to normal next year or return a year older with an even cooler set of antlers.
Thank you all for your input, advice and opinions. I spoke with the landowner tonight and he said that he thought he may be shooter, but since he doesn't hunt...It's kind of up to me. I am leaning towards letting him go another year and seeing what potential he has and what he turns in to..realistically, I don't have anything to lose, so why not. What Tim Ashworth said, I agree with completely and have prided myself on that standard for years. Although, if it would make some little kids day, or a grown man that is new to hunting happy if they shot it, by all means, I would be happy for them. Once again, thank you all and I will keep you updated.
Looks like a deer that's 2 years old to me. If you shoot him he definitely isn't ever going to change or get any bigger. Let him go there's lots of potential there. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Seeing as we only get one buck a year in Ohio, there are no cull bucks at my place. Lol. I'd give him another year or two though. “In a civilized and cultivated country, wild animals only continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsmen.” -Theodore Roosevelt
It might be the way he sleeps. All thru the summer he might get lazy and lay his head down on that side every day, and slowly pushes the rack that way while he is in velvet.
He walks in front of me while I'm in the tree, and he gets a free ride home in the back of my truck! I might even put him on the wall...
