I'm looking into getting another new camera. I have 2 Cuddeback Excites and was thinking about a Moultrie Spy 4.0 infrred one. Does anyone have experience with the Moultrie's? I don't want this to be an argument of whats better. Thanks
huntwi88, I have two Moultrie I-40s. One I have had for two years and the other I have had for one year. So far I am pretty satisfied with them. They take great daytime pics and the nightime IR pics are as good as any other IR pics I have seen and better that most. Hope this helps with your decision. Blessings......Pastorjim
We have a couple of Moultrie's and I have no complaintse....except for the battery life. It seems that when the frigid temps arrive, it drains the battery life. But, it also depends on how many pics you camera snaps off. The Moultire takes quality pics with good clarity. Much like anything else you get what you pay for.
yeah they say that they have a 150 day battery life depending on how many pics. The two cuddeback's I have last forever in summer and fall but when its cold it don't take too long to drain them either. how many battery's and what kind do they take?
I want another cam and have been thinking about the 100 Moultrie. I don't care about IR but I have heard good reviews on the Moultries.
Yeah a lot of people are saying that there so much better than the cuddebacks. The poeple up at Gander said they've sold over 2X as many Moutries as Cuddebacks, so there must be somthing good about them
Price would be the biggest I think. If price were not a option I would have a fleet of Cuddebacks. But having 200 bucks strapped to a tree for some thief to walk off with is kinda nerve racking.
I agree about moultries having battery life issues in extremely cold weather. In the summer, my Moultrie d40s last a month, sometimes 1.5 months, and take A LOT of pics. In the winter, the battery drains extremely fast. I can't compare to cuddeback because I've never had one, but I like the quality of cuddeback pics. For $99.00, the moultrie d40 can't be beat imo.. Very good quality pics for the price.
Just my opinion here Comparing quality pics- Cuddeback hands down Trigger speed- Cuddeback hands down IR set ups- Moultrie
I have had a Cuddeback Capture flash for a little bit now, and its a dandy little camera. Quick trigger speed, very clear pictures, and mine is still running on the original batteries. Cant beat that. Now i have been wanting to get an M-40 or an M-60, as i hear really good things about them and from the pics ive seen they are VERY clear. I would stay away from the D-40 because it takes grainy pics.
I can't honestly give a great review for either as both have failed on me, but I can say that if I had to choose between a Cudde and a Moultrie I would pick the Cudde every single time. I have had several Cuddes and they would perform great for a little over a year, and then they would start either taking random pictures and continue doing so until the batteries died, or they would just stop working. The Moultires I have had were even worse, they would work well for anywhere from one week to one month and then the LCD display would stop working and the photo quality would degrade so bad that it was impossible to tell just what a buck 15 feet from the camera actually had on his head. The Cudde's had a much better trigger speed and picture quality... battery life was a wash with the new Moutlries. I finally got sick and tired of replacing cameras every few months, I wasn't satisfied and I didn't care if it meant from running 3 or 4 cameras at a time, I decided to upgrade to a single Reconyx RC60 and I havn't looked back. The quality and true performance in every aspect has me hooked. I would much rather have a single unit that I know will perform flawlessly every single time I put it out rather than some cheaper units that I don't know if they were work from week to week.
BM, everything about the Reconyx is the best in its class, but the thing that keeps me from ever getting one is the black and white only pictures. I love to see colorful pics and thats why i stay away from IR cameras. You cant go wrong with 1/10 of a second trigger time + rapid fire and long battery life. If only they made a flash version that took color pics.
I agree Caleb, I love the color night photos but it seems that the industry is flushing standard flash cameras out. I would love to see a Reconyx with a standard flash and an upgrade in megapixels... but I don't think that is gonna happen. Until that happens, I am gonna stick with the RC-60 as it performs better than any other unit I have used. A Reconyx with a standard flash, 1/10th second trigger speed, 40,000 photo battery life, and a reduced price down into the $450 range would be sweet, along with upgrading from using CF cards to SD would be sweet!
Am I the only one who uses solar power on his cams? I have 3 moultries and a stealth cam on my place.
I have 2 Moultrie I-40's and realy like that camera. It doesn't have as fast a trigger as the Cuddy but at a mineral site or food source you don't really need the fast trigger. What I really like about the Moultrie, is I can view the pics on my Nikon Digital camera in the woods (can't do that with the Cuddy, it uses a different format on the cards). I usually get at least 6 months out of a set of batteries (6 D cells). I also have 1 Cuddy Capture flash. I like to use this camera on trails because of it's fast trigger speed, rarely misses an animal. But I have to bring the card to a computer to read it. Batteries don't last as long as in the Moultrie, maybe 4 months (4 D cells).
