Hey guys, I am relativity new to the site and saw this new senate bill that may pass here in Kansas. was wondering what other states also allow crossbows during the regular archery season, and what your thoughts are on the subject... I think it would mean a lot more big bucks hitting the ground in late October/early November. i personally have never shot a crossbow but my understanding is they are blazing fast and have extreme ranges, don't even know if that is true.
SB380 -- This bill would allow crossbows to be used during big game archery season by any person who has been issued a valid big game permit. This bill has a hearing scheduled for Friday, February 17, 2012, 8:30 a.m., RM 159-S.

MD allows it. No big deal.

De has as well. Get used to it. There are a lot of mis conceptions about crossbows ie blazing speed and extended range

Not allowed in MN unless you have a disability, but they can be used during the rifle season.

In Minnesota you can use one with a doctors permit while hunting during the archery season. I'm for that but not for letting them to be used by anyone during the archery season. My concern Is not hunting numbers or someone shooting "my deer" or the term slob that's referenced to people who were gun hunters that will try their way with a xbow. I don't believe that to be the case. There's already slob hunters shooting regular bows already. My thing Is these things just aren't bow enough for my liking and would rather have them stay In the firearm season where anyone can use one. Just my 2 cents.

I used to be opposed to it here in WI, but not really anymore. There are people out there with compound bows that shouldn't be. There's no stopping them from being there, so I would rather see them using something that is easier to site in and takes less practice.

An example is a certain person that's very close to me. Every year when he takes to the woods I hope he doesn't see anything to shoot at. He loves to hunt, but doesn't have much interest in archery. Why deny him the chance to hunt? I would rather see him out there with a crossbow than a compound. Their limitations are nearly identical.

And its not true. This is the only problem I have with legalizing them in WI.....educating people as to what they are capable of.

They added the Xbow to archery season this year in FL and I didn't see a great increase in hunters, I only saw guys that used to Bowhunt go get a Xbow because they thought it would be easier than a Compound. As was said above the Speed and extended range is way over rated.

Dan explained better than I did.

They're legal during the entire bow season in both Tennessee and Arkansas, but not Missouri. Missouri is another one of those states that will allow you to use one if you have a disability, but barring that they're not allowed during bow season.

I have no problem what-so-ever with someone hunting with a crossbow, disability or no disability. I haven't seen any problems with them in TN or AR. In fact I rarely ever see anyone using one for hunting. I think that, for the time being, simple peer pressure keeps the number of crossbow hunters to a minimum. I know for a fact that if you show up at our clubhouse in Arkansas with a crossbow, you'd better be ready for a lot of ribbing. It's good natured, of course, but it's still there.

Not singling you out Steve, as a lot of people feel this way. I feel its a slippery slope to make statements like that.

Example: I believe traditional bows should be taken out of the archery season. They're not nearly as effective as compounds and uneducated people will be taking shots with them that they shouldn't be and wounding animals. (Replace "traditional" with compound, crossbow, pistol, muzzleloader, etc. and the argument can be the same.)

Disclaimer: I don't actually feel that way about traditional bows.

Allowed in Alabama. No problem to me as long as other regulations are followed. The few crossbowers I know have been very good hunters who did not bowhunt because of the stories they either heard or could tell concerning lost deer.

A better way to say that would be "educating people as to what they are NOT capable of". I shot a crossbow for a while after shoulder surgery. Heavy, cumbersome, even with a scope they're not nearly as accurate as a compound, especially at longer yardages and there's absolutely NO chance at a second shot. As soon as I could shoot my Drenalin again I sold the crossbow.

They are allowed in Virginia throughout the season. Far as many more deer hitting the ground because of usage. No significant changes the numbers are constant.

    Agreed.

I also shot a crossbow late season of 2000. After my ordeal, I didn't want to stay out of the woods and a crossbow was the only way I could hunt. I absolutely hated it. Its wasn't for me......but its not my place to tell someone what isn't for them when the weapon is capable/incapable of the same things as the weapon I choose to hunt with.

There's allot of things I don't agree with when It comes to the technology In bow hunting today. If It's about efficiency, ban all bow hunting.

I added a disclaimer to the post you quoted me on. As I don't actually feel that way about traditional archery.

That's why you're a good fit for the P&Y club and I'm not.

I just had to get that in there. I figured its been too long since I've said anything about "the club." :poke::)

My beliefs have nothing to do with the P&Y club. It's the way I was brought up.

Agreed. Been a month or so since you last did. ;)

Started out shooting a crossbow for archery, guys gave me serious hell.. "You're not bow hunting you're cheating". As the comments went, felt more like ostracized from other hunters.

Now that I've strictly bow hunt, all those that gave me hell hunt with with crossbows. Damn Hippocrates!

@ Little Chief...Did you know there's an Archery Shop in Memphis?

It's in Midtown near those warehouses I was shocked to even see it there. You can also shoot from treestand elevations.

5454 Pleasant View Rd, Memphis, TN 38134 » Map (901) 377-1113 Give them a call It's called Avery's Archery in Midtown...

umm make sure you get exact directions because it's in Midtown. Don't bring up politics. You'll get an ear full.

I never said they did.....just that they are in line with the club's views. ;)

Move along people. Back to the topic at hand of bashing other hunters out of fear that they will crowd your woods and kill your deer.
