We are really getting on a roll here which kind of puts me in a dilemma. I've been carrying both rifle and bow during our rifle season here which lasts for another week. My one buck tag is only good for this. I will do my best to fill it with bow until this weekend. For the last two days... I will use which ever works out as I want to fill this tag bad. It could be 2 or 3 years before I get lucky to draw another tag for rifle season.

I have my archery tag that is good until the first week into January. I will kill something with that one for sure.

I am still going to carry my rifle since a couple hunters had seen a MT. Lion yesterday near the area I hunt. Would be a major deal if I could get a crack at him. No one has ever shot one on this side of the state. I would love to be the first.

Awesome buck PA, we really pulled in some points over the weekend, good job guys. I have until dec.6th to tag a buck. Then I have to take a 2 week break for shotgun season then get a few
More weeks of late season bow action.

Well the damn road hunters have shut down all deer movement here. Does are back to bed before light and have pretty much augered in to a guys corn field that is still standing in my best area. The bucks are in there too now with rut going on.

There is a very small cattail slough that borders his corn. I was glassing it from the road to see if I had enough cover to sneak into it and setup there. It doesn;t look all that great in that aspect but I should make it work. While I was glassing the slough, a buck popped out of the corn and was milling around by it. Looks promising !!! Wind is perfect for the bucks to be scent checking the corn for hot does on that side.

I will just go in with bow as there is a chance I could pull a double out of it. Can't have a rifle with me if I need to use my archery tag. Probably head back out around 11 this morning and sit for the rest of the day.

Awesome buck. We for sure are doing great. I have quite a few hunts left too and more tags to fill. Good luck to all those getting out there.

The last two afternoon's have been pretty good.

Yesterday I passed on a mid 120 4x4. Twice !! Passed on a freak buck that might have gone around 115 - 120. He actually was mature and I was tempted.

Today I passed on a 130 class buck. Nice buck, just needs another year or so to be big. He has good potential. I had drawn and had the pin on him while I decided. Would have been a 15 yard shot and he had no clue I was there hiding in the cattails when he came through scent checking the slough. He was under 5 yards before hitting the little opening I was guarding. Had the ticker going pretty good as he sounded like a beast going though the dry cattails making all kinds of noise before I saw him. All's I could see was the tips of his tines before he hit the opening.

Will be out in the morning but not sure about the afternoon. Winds are suppose to pick up to 20 -30 mph in the afternoon. Might brave it though.

If I don't put a buck down with bow the last 5 days of rifle season... I have no one to blame but myself. I've had my chances.

Very quiet afternoon where I was hunting. Got snowed on most of the afternoon. Wind was nasty but I found a spot to get out of it. Was surprised I didn't see a deer.

This snow should get the deer back on their feet now with the cold temps moving in. Low of 6 and hi of 14 tomorrow. Friday a low of 2 below and 16 for a high. I am not ready for this yet !!!!!

Guys I missed a buck I call the beast yesterday :-( I am literally heart broken. I've hunted this buck hard all season and shot under him. I misjudged my yardage and he was 8 yards further than I'd thought. A 30 yard pin isn't going to cut it at 38 yards with a 530 grain arrow. I'm thankful for a clean miss, but still feel sick. This is my third season bowhunting and now see the significance of a rangefinder. I'll be purchasing one soon. He would have easily passed my 153" from two years ago. I'm hoping to catch back up with him Sunday. I'm sorry I missed fellas. I was 7 for 7 prior to this. I'm trying to stay positive and use this as a learning experience.

Good luck everyone, and heck of a buck PA!!!

That has to hurt Jeff. A range finder is a must for me. Last year I left it in my back pack and had the buck I wanted most come in front of me. I couldn't tell if he was 30 or 40 yards. I couldn't reach for the range finder as I had to deal with three other bucks with him. I passed as I just didn't want to gamble.

This year the road hunters killed him last Sunday. It hurt as he should have been on my wall. When I hunt... it is on me at all times now !!!

Well I had another encounter with the freak buck. Dirty bugger came out in his usual spot right by the make shift blind I made the other day. The wind was wrong for sitting in it though so I made another one in a different spot about a 120 yards away. I didn't have much cover to hide in but figured I was safe on how the deer had moved through there the other day.

He heads my way and I decided he isn't getting a pass again. If he did what the other deer had done... I would have a 15 yard shot or a 27 yard shot. He didn't follow the plan. He came straight at me. At 15 yards and no shot, he finally turned a little but still quarter to... too much. At 11 yards nothing had changed except I had no cover anymore. I was drawn with the pin on him... hoping he would turn more broadside. He finally spotted me and whirled away. Ran 5 yards, turn quartering away but I just didn't have time to get lined up before he took off.

Didn't see anything else the rest of the afternoon. Was a nippy walk out !!!

That's some good advice! I never thought one was necessary until Now. I hunt private land and have most yardages marked my trees or rocks or other markers and he came in on a weird trail from the north behind me, I have a great window out that side of the tree but it's on a CRP field with nothing to mark yardage. After this season I won't hunt without a rangefinder again!

What do you guys use for a rangefinder? How do you like it? Are there any out there you wouldn't recommend?
