I have just bought a Mathews Creed XS 28"draw @70lb . I am looking at having a 500+ grain arrow for hunting. My plan so far is a 125-150 grain single bevel broad head. And some type of lighted nock. I am not sure on what arrow and spine weight to have with this setup. Maximum shot range 45 yards. Need your guys experience. Thank you Beefie
My thoughts are you are really going to be lobbing them in at around 230 FPS. May have as much as a 24" drop between 20 and 40 yards. By my calculations you will have way less kinetic energy then shooting a 400 gr. arrow out of the same rig.
I don't think the numbers would be that drastic. I'm shooting a 500gr arrow out of a 60# bow at 26.5dl and a IBO of 316 and I'm shooting 226 fps . He would be shooting faster than that and the drop I'm not sure on but 2 feet seems like a lot. Next time I'm out I an going to shoot it and see just got fun. Sent from my XT901 using Tapatalk
Use the first calculator on this page. It was spot on with my field test. Archery Calculators-Calculate Arrow Speed, Kinectic Energy,Front of Center % Look at the table on the right for your drop in inches from 20 to 40. I even ran Beefie's calcs with max poundage ect... Not a lot of guys can shoot a bow at 70, especially in cold weather / hunting conditions.
I will check it out. I don't doubt there is a big drop it just seemed a little off. And if you ran your own test with it and it was close I will have to give it a try. Are you sure you are at 226 fps? Based on their calcs your bow shoots at around 208 FPS. So either your chrono is off or their calc is wrong. Tried another calc and it was the same... So either all calcs on the net or off or?
I shot through the chrono over the summer at the G2G and I was getting 226 consistently . I will take it to the shop and put it through theirs and see what I get.

Out of the demo Creed XS that i have been shooting around with.... A 72lb (70lb maxed out to 72lbs) 28" bow shot one of my 441gr Easton Torch 330's at 273fps. That to me is a perfect balace of speed and weight and will produce alot of Kinetic energy and momentum. My arrows are 330 spine Torches with 75gr brass insert and 100gr field point. They fly like darts and hit like a tank.

May I ask why you want the arrow to be so heavy? What advantages do you gain? 425 Gr. arrow is faster, shoots flatter, and has more kinetic energy then any arrow heavier then it. EG:

No mater what anyone one says: a heavier arrow will have more KE shot from the same bow (tuned for each arrow) at the same poundage. Although I think KE is a poor way to determine arrows penetration. Charts and calculators seam rarely accurate to me. Lots of pluses to a heavy arrow. If you want a heavy arrow use one. I could not care less how much my arrow drops compared to a 400 gr one. That is why I have more than one pin on my sight. I shoot 3 arrows from my 70#/28DL bow: 584gr, 528 & 496. I shoot a 434gr or 480 arrow from my 60/28 bow. I suggest: Axis 300 75gr brass insert Flex-Fletch FFP-360 vanes It will get you at or over 500gr. Get a trail version of Shaft Selector (pinwheelsoftware.com) and play with the tip/insert/nock weight (you mentioned lighted nocks) and shaft length. Once you determine arrow parts for sure you can chose the proper length to optimize the spine.
Actually, your wrong, lol. A heavier arrow will have more momentum, not KE. KE stays relatively uniform from 350grns-500grns. Kinetic energy shouldn't even be considered when selecting an arrow IMHO.
