If i was starving and desperate i would try this but the way i like to hunt is by stealth and having the animal die unstressed (if possible). Nature is cruel enough, if i can kill without the deer even knowing im there then thats how im going to do it. Thats just my opinion. And maybe an excuse because i could never phsyically run a deer down like that. Most i could ever run was 4 miles.
You could take 100,000 people and not 1 could catch a whitetail in the big woods, or even thick woods, couldn't even keep a visual on the deer to know where to run.
Agreed. That's why I alluded to the fact that the trick is to have the tracking ability and terrain to stay on your target animal. But, last I checked, whitetail live in places other than big or even thick woods. It's been proven time and again that a human runner, over a long distance, can run a horse to ground. We all think of horses as distance runners. Whitetail are sprinters. We tend to believe that if we personally can't do something it must be impossible. The fact is, we as a society, are so far removed from our hunter/gatherer roots that many acts that were once common are now deemed inpossible. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
The key when this was a tactic was that it was done by tribes, not by individuals. One on one, the odds are slim and none of success.
More than 1 person for sure. When I was much younger my grandpa would cut a big 10 acre field and all of my cousins would show up when the last few acres of the field were left to be cut. We would all spread out the younger cousins on the perimeter then mid aged then the older cousins. Rabbits would come out as the tractor went by and the older kids would chase - the middle to youngest would turn them back to the center of the field - we would catch all sizes of rabbits even up to full grown. It was a blast - couldn't imagine how we did it looking back now. I've seen beagles run deer for hours (3-4) and never catch them
I'm wondering how many folks got a kick out of the situation... "I saw a doe run by my stand at 5:30 and then 10 minutes later here came a man, in full camo, with a bow, running as hard as he could go after it" hahaha
Hi All NO BS i saw him take off on the track we had maybe 4 inch of snow and open big woods in PA He ran the deer down it took hours but it happened. This was when we were 18 to 20 yrs old and he was probably the only one fit enough to give it a try. This is the same tactic that dogs and wolfs use the deer cannot keep a long steady run.
Actually, that's just what the Native Americans did. They would chase the herd spread out in a pack pushing them towards a cliff while encircling them. If the deer didn't jump off the cliff then they'd get a decent shot with their bows, and if the deer did jump they could just climb down and get it. On the nature preserve around here the path along the cliff is the best place to search for arrow heads. I've found a couple on various cliffs. You may not be able to outrun them. But you sure as hell could outsmart em'! I like the idea of running down a deer. That would take a hell of a lot of stamina. I imagine it'd be a lot funner than just sitting in a stand for hours. Give it another shot bro. But think it through and plan it out next time. Maybe try to find a way to work them into an area where they have to run back towards you.
the book "born to run" about long distance running has a section on stories of men running down deer and antelope in Africa. as I recall the author was able to locate a few natives who could still do it and the trick proved to be staying on the trail of the same animal and after a while the animal becomes over heated and can't run any further which allows the man to catch up and kill it...and the one successful hunt he describes went about 20 miles. interesting book. I would recommend reading it to get the finer points of that strategy.
thanks Turkish621. I started to say great minds think alike but if you've read that book its more likely just a couple of crazy runners.....
That book made me seriously want to become a long distance runner. Great book whether your a runner or not Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
