I had a fox make her den and raise her kits under my barn, which is only 50 yards or so from the house. Of course she moved them after the dogs grabbed one of her kits. That about broke my heart b/c I think fox are about the neatest animal in the woods around here. I have passed up shooting a few of them b/c I just can't bring myself to do it.
HAHAHAHAHA, man you're lucky not to have gotten attacked. Is it possible someone trapped it, started to raise it, then let it go? That type of behavior is typical of animal who's had previous human contact.
Foxes are very adaptable to city living and I am guessing it is no more than the fox being fed or at a minimum rubbaging through trash and has become comfortable with people. During the winter, it is very common to see fox hang around condos/houses/cabins in Summit County Co (where a big chunk of the ski resorts are) at night and not be to afraid of people. They usually just hang around and don't run very far, if any, when encountered.. Earlier this year, I stopped at a 7-11 in Silverthorne about 5:00 A.M. in the morning and a fox was sitting in the parking lot as calmly as a dog. He watched me get out of my vehicle and walk towards him as I entered the store. I got a cup of coffee and once again walked right back by him within 15 feet on my return to my vehicle with him never even flinching ,although he did keep his eye on me.
