Well, I wish it had been the big 140-ish 10pt I saw, but being my first coyote with a bow, and being that I called her back to me with a bleat, I was pretty pumped. Overall, I had a pretty poor weekend, the only 2 deer I could have shot were a small 100" or so 8pt, 2.5yr old, nice little buck, but he needs 2 more years, and a yearling doe, that came running through like something was following her, but nothing followed..... The wind blew all weekend in NW Ohio, sometimes hard enough, I just wrapped an arm around the tree and held on for the ride, but this morning's hunt was my most productive, with the coyote coming trotting in looking for whatever had just made that bleat. I watched her come in from a couple hundred yards away, and then she put the brakes on and stopped looking around the bottom I was hunting for what must've made that noise, so I muffled it and let another little on sneak out, and it was like she was on a line and I was reeling her in. She came trotting in to me, and made it halfway up the bank below the flat my stand was on when at about 12yds, I TWHACKED her. Hit her a little high, only about an inch below the spine on entry side, and maybe 3.5" below on the exit side, so she didn't bleed out well at all, but she died pretty quick, running only about 70yds, and was down in sight. Because the wind was blowing directly in her direction, I felt pretty good about my scent control, considering she came running in towards me with the wind at my back. For those of you in woods with a lot of coyote's a doe bleat seemed to work wonders on this one!!!!
Cool deal man! I have yet to kill a yote. I've seen a few but they were never close enough for a shot.
wow thats impressive, cause those jokers dont stay still for too long! what will u do with the carcass? i know from the past if i'd been hunting on a farmer's land he/she'd give me $15 or so. have see nice skins of them but dont really know how/what to do with it after it was skinned? suppose get it tanned, but where?call the local taxidermy guy...
I was out back in my place and was trying to call using a doe call a couple of years ago with a 12gauge. I was sitting in a tall patch of weeds when I saw movement coming in on me. I could ony see brown leg patches comeing in fast and thought it would eb a doe but a coyote came in 10 yds behind me, I swung to throw somelead at him and the woods busted with yotes. They had surrounded me. I free handed it as I swung and spun him but hit him in the hind end. That's cool you tapped one with an arrow. Good job.
My taxidermy guy tanned deer hides for $65, not sure how much for a coyote but I know they do them. I have thought about getting a couple here. Very nice coats.
That's awesome... first predator I shot with my bow was a red fox that decided to sit on the trail 22 yards from the treestand. They certainly are almost all fur... The coat does look pretty dang good and only a little sewing will be needed to close up the holes!
I got one just a couple weeks ago, so I didn't keep this one, I sorta wish I had, and done a home tan on it, but I was short on time and me skinning a thin-skinned animal would have been a disaster in all likelihood anyhow. The other on I shot was just a pretty, both females, so I'm doing the deer and other prey of coyotes a favor if nothing else in the last 2 weeks.
