Last night, I was mowing my lawn at about 8pm. I have a tractor with a finish mower on it, so I'm not very quiet. Anyway, my dogs were out in the field that had freshly been hayed (bailed on Sunday), they were digging around for moles or something. I looked up and say a coyote standing in the field about 50 or 60 yards from me and about 50 yards from my dogs. I slowed the tractor down, and proceeded to watch that coyote stalk my dogs. He would take a couple steps, crouch and wait, then a couple more. All the while, my dogs were oblivious to what was going on. When the coyote got about 25 yards from my dogs, I decided to move so it would take off, but it didn't ever really run away. I drove the tractor to the other side of the house, ran in side and got my 270 out of the closet, loaded it and stepped out on the back patio. By that time, my dogs had obviously seen the coyote and chased it down into the timber behind the house. I have a Great Dane mix and a Blue Healer. So, I got back to mowing and just as I was about to round the corner, I saw the coyote standing in the field again. About 150 yards west of where the dogs chased him in. It was just standing there. so I jumped off the tractor, ran inside, grabbed the gun again and opened the back door. This time the yote was still there. I pulled the gun up and couldn't even see out of the scope from all the condensation from the temp change. I wiped it the best i could, aimed and pulled the trigger. Must have just plain missed him. Tried to eject my shell and it was stuck in the chamber. Must have been from that condensation because I have never had a shell hang up like that in this gun. All the while the coyote was still standing there. Finally, by the time I got a good round in the chamber, I saw the yote vanish into the timber.

I can't believe how unafraid it was. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with it, in fact, it was probably one of the best looking coyotes I've ever seen. Clean coat, no mange, nice and healthy looking. Not sure what would prompt it to be so brave. I wish I had been able to put it down, I had a coyote attack my little dog a couple years ago, so I don't have much use for them.

Anyone have a similar experience, or any ideas what would cause them to be so brave?
