Last year i had very little luck calling in coyotes. so this year i decided to step it up. I just got a turbo dogg game caller, and a mojo critter decoy. My goal is to decimate the coyote population to help bring back the rabbits and squirrels to my area. Any other tips from some of the coyote guys. scents? any of that.

Mind the wind, don't over hunt a spot, and mind the wind.

Put your caller well upwind. Don't underestimate the howls. They will come barreling in. Pup in distress after the shot will provide more shots. Get ready for a freaking RUSH!!!

I'm a novice and started to get more serious last year. Here's what I've found out.

I practice the same scent control as I do for bow hunting.

    Full camo.

I place my call and decoy so I'm calling in a crosswind set up.

    Hunt at night if legal.

I use a shotgun most of the time becuase cover where I hunt is so thick.

If your goal is to decemate the population I say have at it but they'll wise up and get tougher to hunt. You'll want to start trapping too.

Calling is fun when it works but trapping is the way to get rid of them just takes time.

As Happyhunter said...although he is a new member, nonetheless, hunt the wind; they're smart. I also always try to hunt a crosswind - keep the wind blowing into a field or something that they're not going to want to cross or if they do, you will be able to see them.

Don't start calling to loud. You could have one or a pair just out of sight and blow them out of the spot. I start out my calling sequences at about 30% volume. If nothing I then go to 75%. Try and setup so they can't get down wind of you. They will try!

We cAll em some here in ohio... seems like we get one to come in ever 10-15 set ups.... I have had very little luck with coyote vocalizations. We do the best with rabbit sounds. Preferably lightning jack or jack rabbit distress on a fox pro.

We called this one in last week.

While calling them is fun.... it's just not practical if your looking to "thin" the coyotes in your area.... if your looking to really set em back, I recommend learning all you can on snaring or trapping then with leg holds....

I like a good challenge... and it's taken me a few years to really start understanding the foothold game with coyotes.... but man is it exciting and very effective.

^^^ leg holds are the way to go. I've got a buddy who's also cought some in cage/live traps. He has more luck with bob cats in those though.
