I'm planting clover and chicory on about 2 acres and was wondering what I could use to cover the seeds to the correct depth. I know they can't be planted any deeper than 1/4-1/2 inch deep. I can't afford to buy a cultipacker, so I need to know what would be a good substitue. Would a lawn roller like this one work? http://www.sears.com/productdetails.do?partNumber=07124787000P
Last season I just used my ATV to run over it. Worked great. Came up like it should have. I have a few small plots I am doing this season and will use a rake to just rake it in.
get a piece of 6"pvc pipe with end caps and drill a then take a rod run threw center and fill pipe with sand dirt whatever and drill holes on end of pipe and bolt a chain to it..lol sorry ghetto but works
Clover doesn't need to be buried very deep (in fact it shouldn't be). We usually just run over it with the 4wheeler to compact it in. Great results over the years.
I agree with everyone here, any of those will work. In the past I have used an old tailgate from a small trailer with metal mesh welded to it and some added weight. I have looked around the last couple of years for a cultipacker and even considered making one but I found a website the end of last year where I can buy a new one for $479. It can be pulled with a 4 wheeler or tractor, it is abby usa. They sell several different products like that. Not sure what your budget is but just to get the info out.
I've made a cultipacker a couple times now (friends keep using it for extended years, thus the need for multiple units). 8" plastic drain tube with a metal pipe centered in the tube (I drill a hole in a 1/2" thick pc of plywood that fits into the drain tube ends). Fill with concrete, attach brackets to the pipe, and you've got a cultipacker.
X2. Or the other suggestions will work also. Doesn't have to be much. Small light yard roller will work great too
the lawn roller will work great. I use one behind my 4 wheeler when planting all my clover, alfalfa, and brassicas. I bought it used on craigslist for $40
