Quick question. This year I plan on putting earth scented wafers in my scent proof bags to try and infuse as much cover scent as possible into my camo. After buying into all the hype, I bought a bunch of scent killer spray last year, and although I was successful I attribute it more to scouting and playing the wind. My question is if I have earth scented clothing, should I just use the scent killer spray on my under layers, face and neck, and boots? Doesn't make a lot of sense to spray scent eliminator after spending all the time to infuse my camo.
I put pine branches from the areas I'm hunting in my scent bags. I let them dry over night so the moisture from the fresh branches doesnt get the cloths damp and I put themloth separate cloth bag so the sap doesn't get all over everything. Works great. All my cloths smells like FL pine.
I quit using cover scents several years ago. If you research it, you will find it has been proven that deer can distinguish up to 6 different scents at once. SO now they will smell you.........and pine. I am planning to really confuse them this year....gonna use pizza scent. More ingredients = confusion!
I use only urine based cover scents like fox or raccoon urine on my boots. My general thinking is that since urine scents are pretty much ammonia by the time we get them, it would be close to that on the ground from a real animal anyway. It's a powerful cover scent for your boots and works very well. I've talked to several trappers over the years that echo this same theory.
You are not going to fool a buck's nose. Keep your clothes scent free by washing them in baking soda and play the wind.
I too quit using cover scents many years ago. If you go into an Itailian restaurant and take a wiff....you will smell many things with one inhale. You get garlic, basil, etc and maybe the waitress' perfume too. That tells me a deers nose (which it by far superior to mine) can smell the cover scent, me and lots of other things in less than a second. I try (take great pains) to go as scent free as possible and watch the wind. With that said, if cover scents work for you...great. Keep using them.
As some on here already said. A deers nose can smell you even if your using a cover scent. I would just try to be as scent free as possible.
Last season i tried something new and left my clothes in the pine trees over night and used scent killer on my clothes and surprisingly a 10 pointer came in the wrong direction i was expecting of course i was sleeping and woke up at it looking at me (rooky mistake). I wasn't using any scent lock or any scent controlling clothes but i did use buck bomb and i think that covered my scent but that seemed to work for me.
I am going to guess the thermals carried your scent over the buck. The pine and the buck bomb had nothing to do with it. Work on staying awake while hunting
