I have an area that I would like to add cover too. Its a stretch of land along the road where the deer cross onto my property, and its such an easy target for road hunters. Is there any type of grass seed I can broadcast that will take without any tilling, that might take and grow to 3-4ft tall? (perennial preferably)

This is all I can think to do since the area is not actually my property, just a small peice that is in between mine and the road. There is a small powerline that runs parallel with the road, then woods beyond that. It does get some sunlight part of the day. If I can get some type of cover there making seeing the deer from the road less obvious it would be a huge help. I hate road hunters.

    Any suggestions? Thx

I gotta figure out the same for my field. This year I'm contemplating dnr doing some decoy work there. Word of mouth after that may work then.

Would something like switchgrass work ok? I'm just looking for the best way to add some decent cover to this area, given the little amt of work I'll be able to do to this spot. (I know, those two things don't go together real well)

If there are power lines running through there then nothing will work permanately due to the city probably kepping it cut low for maintenance. I would grow some type of vine that flowers or any type of tall weeds in the area. Just transplant them and they will spread like wild fire

Switchgrass is what I was thinking, what about cattails.

Cattails won't take unless it stays wet...really wet. Switchgrass would work but it takes some time to establish. Sow it thick...I mean really thick and throw some nitrogen on it and top dress it again when it gets a 12" tall just before a rain.

Egyptian Wheat is ideal conditions will be 8 to 12 feet tall in one season, mine is about 4 foot tall and not getting enough sunlight deep in the woods. It needs to be planted everyear but you could do a strip of EW and a strip of switchgrass for your Now and Later setup. EW right away and switchgrass for years to come. Just let the EW strip grow bakc into weeds or plant it again the second year if you want.
