I'm new to the foodplotting scene and have what I'm sure is a simple questions for some of you. In this instance I am going to use oats as a cover crop for a perennial mix. Do I seed the oats normally (100lbs/acre) or do I reduce the seeding rate....and by how much? Thanks
Check your seed bag it'll tell what to do. However most oats are an annual seed but if they seed out they'll come back the follow ing year. I recommend that you frost seed oats on your plot. Which means as soon as the last frost comes out of the ground go.and broadcast your seed. Works really well for clover. I dong plant any oats as the deer don't seem to eat them here in illinois as well as.other food.plot seeds. Such as clover, alfalfa, chicory, turnips, radishes, and winter wheat. Check out www. I am planting a perennial mix of clover, alfalfa, small burnett and sainfoin. A cover crop is recommended, hence the use of the oats. My question is whether I seed the oats normally or reduce the seeding rate since they aren't being planted solo?
I would cut the rate in half and wait til they germinate then check the plot. If it seems to have bare spots just go in an broadcast over those areas. Tjat way they're not to thick. Oats will grow very fast and easy. They should be germinated with in 15 days if not you have a problem with your soil. Tyler Rector BHOD prostaff
