Why does "country" radio shove rascal flatts, emerson drive, carrie underwood, kenny chesney down my throat until I gag and can no longer tune into "country" music radio channels?

There is a lot of excellent country music out there but they have instead chose to kill me slowly with this "mainstream" "country" BS.

That group and then rascal flatts imo is the starting point with what is wrong with country music today.

Nothing but mainstream is ever played on the radio. That is especially true when it comes to country and rock.

If you want real stuff you either have to dig deep in the current jumble of the music industry, or look to the past. Personally, I like to look to the past.

That's why I have an MP3 player. My radio is only tuned to talk radio. And I don't mean Rush Limberger.

I honestly havent listened to a country station in like 3 years for anything onther than the weather report. I cant stand the mainstream of today. Its plain sick. It sometimes seems like a freakin contest to see just how red-freakin-neck you can be, biggest redneck wins chart-toppers, not for me. And then there are the saps that have been mentioned in this thread will not even go there.

Disclaimer: There is a station down in Ft. Worth that I listen to when I am close to there. Nothing but texas country and some red dirt. They are ok dont wanna lump them in

We have an independant station here called KNON, Texas Outlaw radio. The DJs are all volunteers and most of them have been on the air for years. The programming goes all over the place, aly country, blues. reggae, you name it, but if you know when to tune in ,(afternoon drive time), you can hear some REAL country music not that pop crossover crap played on mainstream stations.

Maybe what YOU think is wrong with country today is what other folks like. Granted, your Rascall Flatts or Kenny Chesneys aren't Merele Haggard or Waylon Jennings but then again, how we're in a different era than we were then and radio stations are going to play what the majority of people want to listen to. To each his own, but if they work hard, perform well and provide enjoyment to some I have a hard time calling any music, and I quote, "bull sh**"

I don't think they play what the majority of people want. I think they play what Nashville wants them to play. They play what gets promoted from within. Whens the last time a mainstream country music hit came from a woman that wasn't really easy on the eye? Its not about musical talent in many cases, its about whats "marketable". Me I'll go with talent over looks any time. Mainstream Nashville "Country" is bubblegum pop and a truckload of the previously mentioned BS.

Just curious here- out of "today's country" artists, who do you consider to be real country musicians?

I like Rodney Atkins, Eric Church, Toby Keith Craig Morgan, Zac Brown Band, Alabama (granted they aren't today's country, but I could listen to them all day) etc and the like. I do not, however, like Jason Aldean, Jake Owen, etc.

Now with the whole Rascall Flats, Sugarland, Kenny Chesney debate. I listen to them all and like their music but I don't really consider them your typical country music, more pop country. Rascall Flats makes some goods songs, beautiful lyrics and the dudes can straight sing. The only reason I like Sugarland is Jennifer Nettles, again pop country, but I just like her voice. And I'll listen to KC cause he makes feel good music, with an emphasis on positivity and optimism.

That's why there's satellite radio. Regular radio has been garbage for years. Now if they could just create an alternative to mainstream TV which is so horrendous these days, I don't even watch but two shows.

This is a debate over personal opinion, there is no right or wrong.

If you don't like it, don't listen.

Someone is obviously making money though, if that were false, they would not be on the radio.

I will list a few of todays mainstream country musicians I like in somewhat alphabetical order. (leaving out not so currents like Garth, Sawyer Brown, Alabama, Clint Black etc)

    Blake Shelton
Brad Paisley (not so much his gimmicky songs.)
    Craig Morgan
    Darly Worley
    Gary Allen
    George Strait
    Hank Jr
    Jamey Johnson
    Luke Bryan
    Montgomery Gentry (most of theirs)
Trace Adkins (not his swing batter or honkey tonk type stuff)
    Tracey Lawrence
    Zac Brown

Radio stations play what makes them money.

Don't get me wrong, I do really like a lot of the mainstream songs/artists out there, but when you hear thier songs 4x a day...that ruins it quick. In another month & a half, Chesney comes to Pittsburgh, its one of the most fun events there is. The week or 2 leading up to the show you will here at least 1 song/HOUR of his, if not 2. That's how it was last year.

Back on topic, I don't know where you'd find a radio station that plays a wider selection of country. We need a "Bob" version of a country station.

Oh yea, and too add...country does not have the over played mainstream market conered...ever listen to a POP station...they are worse by far.

Speaking of Rascall Flats, anyone remember the lead singers hunt on one of the Realtree Monster Bucks dvd's? I don't remember which one but these two bucks come by him and he immediately shoots the larger of the two which was a decent 8. But keep in mind he is on some deer ranch somewhere and the deer he took is far from top end for the ranch I'm sure. What proves this is like 10 minutes later this absolute stud of a buck comes in his set and stands around broadside forever and all he can do is look at him. He joked about it and handled it pretty well, I would probably have sack punced myself for that.
