A little late but I thought I'd ask since I haven't seen it mentioned. Who picked up Jamey Johnson's newest album "The Guitar Song"? Worth checking out, unless you are into Sugarland and stuff like that....and if you are you should probably shoot yourself (with a paintball gun...in the back of your exposed hamstring at point blank range, if you are not able to stretch that far have someone else do it). That is all.
Picked it up when it came out last fall. He is one of my favorites going right now. Seen him at Willie's 4th of July picnic in Fort Worth and have caught him a couple other times as well.
Yeah we know Hooker. But we can't all be as musically evolved as some. I remember these songs you linked, sounds like some new-age Simon & Garfunkel or Jim Croche, not that there's anything wrong with that some of it is "cool" to listen to I guess. I like to listen to it when I'm enjoying my arugala and other fine herbs. Nick Drake - Day is Done Bon Iver - Calgary Fleet Foxes - Montezuma Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers The Walkmen - Woe is Me Bill Callahan - Eid Ma Cack Shaw The Dodos - Black Night Just messin with you but the fact that you linked that article to a thread about Jamey Johnson is amusing to me as it seems to show you don't know much about him or his music. For some reason I thought you would be likely to at least check him out before you covered him up with the "main stream / pop-country" blanket. I'm not saying he's the next coming or anything but in a time when country music has sank to an all time low he reminds of some of the older artists and reminds of what I liked about country music. One of the only songs of his to ever win an award and i think his highest album sales ever were Gold so he is far from mainstream. He's got quite a few as good as this one that you will never hear on the radio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYGwxf1gCC4
I'll admit, I've never heard Jamey Johnson, I just read that article today, and wanted to post it somehow, and this thread seemed like the most logical place. I'll check him out when I'm not at work.
What's the name of that song...it goes something like this... "Well, my mamma and I got drunk as hell last night, and got in to a fist fight. I heard that lonesome train whistle the next morn and it hurt my head cause I had a hang over as I woke up in jail from beating the tar n sh!t out of my poor mamma the night before...."
lol I'm confused to whether the people participating in this thread are country music fans, or not? I'm a country music fan....always have been. I'd have to say my favorites right now would be Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Brantley Gilbert, and Justin Moore. Jamey Johnson is a good dude too. Not one of my favorites, but he's a good one.
I'm a country music fan. Along the lines of what Hooker posted, there does seem to be an onslaught of hillbilly and white trash songs recently. Not a fan of those, but mainstream wise, Brad Paisley is one of my favorites, partially for his songs, but also because of his talent on the guitar. I always have so much respect for people who can sing AND play and instrument, let alone play one like he does.
Do girls wear short skirts, pig tails and halter tops to rock concerts? And I completely agree on Brad P. The dude can flat out play the strings. I don't know **** about the guitars - but he is very impressive.
Hook you should check out Jamey Johnson he's not you typical "new country". He's very old school with his music but his lyrics are incredible!! "Guitar Song" is a great album. It has a dark album and a light album. The dark is about hard times and life in general and the light has a redemptive feel. I think you would like him. My favorites on that one are "Cant Cash my Checks" "Heartache" "Playing the Part" (which has a more of a mainstream feel) and "Thats why I Write Songs" which he recorded at the Ryman Theater in Nashville. So good!!
Pig tails? Is that a good thing on a girl over the age of 12? We are talking about hillbillies here, so maybe its better I don't know the answer to that question.
Hooker, As much as I listen to country, along with alternative rock, and most other genres out there... That article was spot on... And it's kind of hypocritical to say that because I like those songs that it describes... but it was 100% true.
The article was spot on. Country songs are often hypocritical, mostly written by wondering if their old truck is going to still be running this year, tired of working their backs off, all dirt roads, quiet country towns, etc... I guess songs like that are written so the listener can relate to them. A lot of them grew up poor: Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, etc.. I guess those are the ones singing that can really relate to the small towns, old trucks, and hillbilly songs. Now Rascal Flatts on the other hand, those boys are just too hillbilly. :P
As they get older, the pigtails become more of an asset, if you will. And we were talking about country music, until folks drove this thread off a cliff!
I listen to older stuff like Hank,Garth,Alan Jackson, and Chris Ledoux. But I like Brad Paisley, Gary Allan, Justin Moore, and such.
I'm a bluegrass fan more than a country music fan. I like country and western too. I just made those words up and when I asked who it was sang that song somebody said "Garth Brooks" funny as hell.
