Could rattling work on a field edge?

I am thinking about doing some rattling Saturday morning. The stand I would sit on is on a field edge that has timber to my back that I know bucks sometimes bed in. I cannot go into the timber and set-up because I don't have access to hunt there. My plan is to put my decoy up standing ~10' off of the edge and rattle ~ 1 hour after sunrise. Any thoughts as to if this could work? Will the buck get hung up at the tree line and not come into the open during daylight even though a decoy is there?

I am trying to get more proactive now that the rut is near because the bucks are NOT moving enough during daylight yet. Suggestions? Thanks.

Columbus took a chance. I would rattle as soon as its legal to shoot and you can see your pins.

Rattling with a decoy in front of you can be a deadly combo. Make sure you have the decoy where an approaching buck can see it, and also the wind will have to be absolute perfect. The buck is going to try to circle downwind of you and the decoy, and then chances are the gig is up.

    GFY,

I've done It a good half dozen times on corn field edges, I was successful at least 3 times bringing bucks In. One of those 3 bucks was a 3.5 year old or 4.5 year old. I already had shot my deer a week earlier so my season was over (one tag area) but I wanted to learn how to rattle so I went out In a stand along side a corn field and rattled In a 120" to 125" buck, couldn't believe It!! I was happy and pissed at the same time!! The other 2 If I remember right were a 1.5 and a 2.5 year old.

I'm actually glad you brought this up. Now that I think of It maybe It's something I should do again with the success I had doing It many years ago on corn field edges.

If the wind was at your back blowing to the field good chance he will circle if you manage to grab his attention in the first place. Good luck!

Well this is a straight field edge so if he is going to circle the wind he will have to go into the open where I can see him and at least know this worked. Do others agree to rattle right at daybreak or wait a little? I've read in the magazine that you should wait to see if deer are moving first then rattle when the initial "rush" is over. More thoughts please.

Are bucks reacting to rattling yet for anyone?

I am about 50/50 when I rattle at dawn. I have rattled them in right at first light, and I have also done it mid-morning.

For me it's a bit to early to start bashing the horns together.

Absolutely it can work, just make sure that the wind isn't blowing into the timber and let 'er rip.

Great! I am going to be hunting hard this weekend so that is just the start. All I need now is the right wind. Maybe I will throw a grunt or two during rattling.
