thinking of trying a diy trip for the little deer ,what state would be my best bet ,n.m.or ariz. iknow they live in pockets what are some of the best cover to look for?
Don't know anything about coues, but I think either states would be fine based on seeing hunting shows hunt them in those states. Wish I could be more help. Good luck.
I've done it once and may go again this year. Arizona without a doubt is your best bet. Mexico if you can afford it. Arizona has a OTC tag that enables you to hunt essentially the lower half of the state during the rut (January). New Mexico is unit specific and you must enter the draw, even though several units you are guaranteed to draw. Look for brushy desert hillsides and canyons. They seem like they are as small as a rabbit so good glass is a must, and be ready to sit behind a spotter all day long. Then stalking them in the driest environment on the continent is no easy task either. If you can find a good water hole (tanks most often) it can pay huge dividends to sit on one of them. The other deer species in Maryland is Sika deer, Coues are just a tiny subspecies of whitetail found only in the far southwest.
Nope, Texas whitetails are small bodied in their own right, but I don't think you are envisioning just how small Coues deer are. Think mid sized chocolate lab with a basket 6 point rack strapped on his head, and that would be a GREAT Coues buck.
