Just read where Illinois farmers have already planted over 30% of their corn crop for this year. Last year at this time less than 1% was in the ground. I know of a few farming families around here that are done, or are nearly finished. Last I talked to my uncle, he was supposed to start planting our land last week. I actually learned to like hunting the standing corn last year, after figuring out exactly how the deer were traveling through it. I had some awesome hunts set up right on the edge of corn fields. However, for people with little or no corn fields on their land, this should come as great news.
Last year was messed up. We didn't planted corn until May 20th last year. This year we already have most of the corn in. I have spots picked out for hunting already. Tim
Oh and I plant our corn. I will get first dibs on the spots just because I have a head start on the other guy at work. I've got to get 3 or 4 ladder stands moved and going for this fall. Plus find a couple trees for my climber. I have already picked out 5 spots to get the trail camera setup for this summer plus figured out where we will do our long range scouting from just based on the corn fields and how the deer normal use the area. Life is good !! Can't wait for summer scouting !!! Tim
I hate you guys I really do. LOL I have to walk around looking at oak trees for acorns. I am jealous.
Really? I'd rather hunt a good acorn crop than a corn field anyday.. older bucks don't show up in fields till after dark.. but they'll show with plenty of light in a wooded setting.
Corn already sprouting just up the road...WAY ahead of last year...guess some guys will have to nix the standing corn excuse this year
i never had corn effect my hunting till last year. I THINK i learned a few things on how do deal with standing corn. But I won't know for another year at least.
Yea you would think it would be awesome, but with all the deep ravines and hollows in my area the wind will kill ya, but we make due.
Pretty much all the corn is in around here. My field is planted, surrounding fields. It's way earlier than usual. I figure we'll now have hail storms or drought or something to mess with the fields.
Wow! Very few fields are planted in my neck of the woods and with this heavy rain over the weekend it won't get done or even started for a bit longer.
