Please tell me the difference in these scenarios and why they are allowed in one place but not the other. School: Your child grabs a free condom from the jar. Gas Station Bathroom: Your child buys a 50 cent condom from the condom vending machine. That child is going to get that condom if it is offered at the school or not, the school is forcing NOTHING on your child. If that free condom is not there at the school, they still have intent to get said condom, and will go to the corner gas station. Would the cashier tell you if your child bought a condom from the bathroom? Do gas stations have no right to provide something to your child without your knowledge? By the way guys... This argument has been one of the better ones I've seen on these forums. Nothing has gotten to out of hand in 200+ comments, bravo.
I'm inclined to agree that passing out condoms in school conveys the impression that society approves of premarital sex. But there are so many other sources illustrating this approval, why focus on this one instance? You folks who put off indoctrinating your kids about sex and the proper attitudes towards sex until the last possible moment are just inviting the schools, etc., to do it for you.
You act like condoms aren't readily available from a multitude of services. My issue with it is that it is coming from the school system. Those kids can get them from many other sources including planned parenthood, or god forbid they sack up and go buy them like everyone else. Hell, you can buy stuff over the internet these days so you don't even have to go to the store and pick them up. This is information that I would teach in my sex education class so they would be informed and have the information they need when the time comes.
I think it has been pretty clear with the decline in teenage birthrates that sex education works much better than teaching abstinence. Thus the reason why I have no problem with schools providing condoms to the student who willingly take them for whatever reasons, whether they do not have the funds or are too afraid to discuss the topic with their parents. Students pro actively taking condoms means that kids are understanding the consequences of sex.
I get what you're saying... But I am just having a hard time with the difference in getting the condom from a school and buying it somewhere. Why is it such a huge deal that they get it from the school and not when they go somewhere to buy it?
I really don't know how many times I have to say this. The reason that I am against it is because the schools job is to educate. Nothing less, nothing more. Anything outside the education process should not be within their rights. Providing healthcare, in this case condoms, to my child without my authorization is unacceptable to me. As a parent of a minor, all of those decision should be left up to me.
This sums it up in a nutshell. Any other arguments are all moral based. And of those given I have yet to hear any that have illustrated a practical solutions that is cost effective long term as education and easy access to birth control.
Because just offering the condom promotes an amount of acceptability. By having them offered to minors, the schools are giving the impression that they approve of these minors having sex. I don't want daughters school giving off that impression to my daughter, or anyone else's daughter.
Schools provide health and sex education. So, I guess you could argue that they are well within their process. They teach your children how to brush their teeth and test their hearing. Is that healthcare?
If anything, it promotes safe and smart sex, which has been proven to be better than promoting abstinence.
Im 17 years old and quite frankly dont want to be sexually active until I get married. I dont see this a problem...but I know for a fact if the student ask any one of the Coaches at school he/she will give him a condom. I remember freshman year they passed around the basket. Guys and girls were gathering those things up like some one said it was Easter. That made me sick. Never dated in high school either...would rather wait. Bowhunting already takes enough of my money...I dont need to paychild support(condoms can break) and dont need a girl to take my money. This maybe good in some cases. As kids dont have to go out and pay for them...but at the same time I could a lot of bullying. Girls will be girls and call girls *itches or $luts. More and More. I see it all the time. Been to 8 different high school and havent even graduated yet.
No. They teach math too, but they don't give them a calculator to do it with. The do screenings, but if services are needed they inform the parents and it's up to the parents to get the child help. I don't really think these are even remotely similar.
Public school is so much more that just an education, you learn to deal with people it is the beginning of self discovery. It is where the first cut is between the wheat and the chafe, if you think kids are just learning academics in high school you have your head in the sand. Like I said on another post School busses are filled with feral youth, and far too often the bad influence wins over the good influence.
Can someone name one bad consequence from a school providing condoms to those students that ask for them?
They are being offered at gas stations... I guess they approve of minors having sex as well. I guess I think of it differently... My view is that they are promoting safe sex, and not promoting people to have sex because they are there.
Actually, they do. Many schools give them laptops. One of the functions they use them for is math. If a girl gets pregnant, the school will gladly allow the parents the opportunity to get that child help. But, fortunately, condoms prevent that from happening more than it would without them.
