Though I don't have the pistol I'm after yet... I do have one... and I'm looking to get my Concealed weapons permit, maybe this week... and just have a general question... When you "carry" do you have one in the chamber? Do you put all your trust in the safety alone? Or if the time arises are you going to "make" time to rack a shell in?
I usually dont, which might be dumb. If you did need to use it, you'll probably need a quick shot. But then again, it only takes a second to chamber a shell.
I don't chamber one either. If I feel something shady or uneasy I would chamber one in 2 seconds. I just think at the low chance you would need it, I don't want to have it discharging in the back of my mind.
I keep one in the chamber. I guess I don't want to take chances on a jam nor do I want to give the bad guy any extra time to do something stupid.
I'm locked and loaded at all times. Always. I continually think about different scenarios... and one that I keep thinking about is a situation where a gunman enters a store or somewhere where I'm not the primary target but I'm in a position to take him out after the initial action goes down... and I don't want to have to alert an assailant by loudly racking my slide.
alot can happen in the time it takes to chamber a round.... carry it cocked locked and ready to rock....
I keep mine cocked, locked and ready to rock. You dont know when thing can go wrong. My brother-in-law finally talk me out of caring my 41mag, so Im caring a COLT COMMANDER, with Wilson combat tuned pistol. Just some food for thought, just rambling.
Condition 1 at all times. (Cocked and Locked) You won't have time to rack one into the slide if something does go down and you surely don't want a jam due to short-stroking the slide. I carry a Dan Wesson CBOB .45 with 7 round Tripp Research Cobramags. If you feel uncomfortable with relying on the mechanical safety there is a way to ease your nervousness. Take your pistol (Which has been checked for proper function of all features), ensure it is unloaded. Cock it, engage the safety and holster it. Carry it around your house all day. At the end of the day, look at it. Is it still on safety? Has the hammer dropped (striker for some)? If not, don't worry about it.
You guy's are lucky here in WI it would take an act of god to get a CC permit. It is 1 of 2 states that they don't offer then up unless you have some major reason and even then you more than likely won't get it.
When I CC any of my Glocks, XD's or M&P's, I don't have one chambered. When I CC one of my 1911's, they are cocked and locked.
I carry with a round in the chamber, hammer down... Both of my carry weapons are single action, and I drill with my SA/DA pistols to go hammer back to SA so its just natural. Never felt comfortable carrying hammer up on a chambered round.
That's what I am carrying these days, nice little 38. If need be I can fit it in the front pocket of my jeans and no one is the wiser. I do have plans for a Taurus 809 in my near future.
If you're going to carry a 1911, cocked and locked is the way to go. You may wish to look at a double action revolver if you aren't comfortable carrying it this way. When you take the CC class you will no doubt get more info to make up your mind. Unfortunately I live in IL and will never get the chance. Hopefully we will never have the need. Good luck to you.
