Who has taken a concealed carry class? I am buying another handgun after the first of the year, and I am planning on getting a concealed carry permit. What did you have to do for your class? I'm guessing there is a paper test, along with a hands on shooting portion? I just want to have an idea of what will be expected before I sign up for one.
Mine was an all day Saturday class with a written exam and then a shooting proficiency given same afternoon at the range. That was over 15 years ago. Not exactly sure what it takes now.
Here it's basically open book after listening to a boaring dumb ass a good part of a day. Then off to the range to pass a shooting test so easy a blind guy could pass it.
We had 4-5 hr class taught by MI state police sgt...included lecture for couple hours, shooting at range with situational training(for self defense), and then open book but timed exam - pretty easy but informative. Glad I took it though I haven't got my concealed carry as I don't really need it with our open carry laws and the class is good forever so I can apply for permit at any time. It was kind of funny to see the retired folk(esp the couple of ladies in late 70s who had never fired a gun) there so they could carry to protect themselves and thier dogs from the wolves when they went for walks. Sadly to say on that same note I carry at work for basically the same reason...no one has actually been attacked by them here yet...though one forest service forestor got treed by a pack...I just don't need to be the first and I do see plenty and they(except for the pups) are not afraid of humans.
I heard it was pretty easy, but I didn't want to get my hopes up I'm no expert on shooting handguns or anything, but I'm sure I would have no problems passing a shooting test.
Pretty much the same except the guy had good stories. Didn't have to take the shooting test though but then I only got a Class 2. Class 1 requires a shooting test. Tim
In oregon we do not have a "concealed weapons permit" You cannot conceal a sword or a long gun or nun chucks. we have a concealed hand gun license we can only conceal handguns whether it be a simple revolver or a sub-machine gun, as long as it is a hand gun you're good to go. I had to take a 3 hour class that was less informative than hunter education class. No test, just pay attention and you would pass. No going to the range, we never even touched a gun. requirements in Oregon; at least 21 years of age must not be a felon must not have been convicted of domestic violence must not have a restraining order must not be pending trial that could imprison you for more than 1 year No dishonorable discharge from the service pretty much as long as you can legally buy a handgun from a dealer you will pass *in Oregon you can buy guns at 18. you can buy handguns from non dealers at 18. If you want to buy a handgun from a dealer you must be 21. makes no sense but that is what the law is
WOW, did not realize the difference in CWP qualifications. Here in SC we did the written portion in the a.m. and then took the field course after lunch. The a.m. portion was very informative and we all were told about the does and don'ts. What to do in certain situations and how to react and what to say when the Real Law arrived. Knowing what to do before and after could save your live and keep you and your family from further hardships. If it was boring or not informative it sounds like the Instructor should have his license revoked. This is serious business and would only take a mistake of ONE to help the anti's take our carry permits away.
Yeah, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun here, too. That is why I am waiting until after my birthday (Jan. 1) to buy my new handgun. First thing I buy - case of beer, second thing - a new handgun Not to use together of course. I doubt I ever actually conceal carry, but I just want to have the option to in case I am on the road. If that state recognizes KS concealed carry anyways, which most surrounding states do.
Carry everywhere that you can legally carry. Be smart and never lose your cool. I carry everywhere I can. I remember watching a young lady giving her testimony about NOT having her weapon when she had the right to carry. She watched several people die, including a family member, because she made a choice not to carry that day. Made a lasting impression on me. I refuse to be helpless while some thugs or mental case harms my family.
It's really easy. It's more or less about showing up and putting the time in. Just like hunter safety..... I would recommend the all day Saturday class rather then the weeday classes. Classes range from $75 to $100 depending on the instructor. Be prepared to wait for your CC for up to six weeks after you submit your papers. I think I waited like 5 for mine. Also I would recommend getting a seperate card rather then having them include it on your DL. Nothing like someone asking for your DL and them seeing it on there. I don't like advertising.... Defeats the entire purpose of a CC. Visit this link if you haven't already. Good info on this site. It's where I started. http://ksccw.com/index.php
Thanks for the info, guys. A guy I went to highschool with is having a class sometime soon, he is charging $125 for it. I don't think I will have my new handgun by then though, so I will have to find another one.
There's no requirement as already stated for PA. But I have taken an NRA personal protection class. It was geared more towards just learning drills to get familiar with your gun of choice and various things about defensive situations.
Rules are different in each state of course. I took the course before I was actually old enough to carry. I thougt was very good. We learned how quickly one can take a gun away from you, the lesson being, if you pull out a gun, use it. If you don't intend to use it, no point in giving it to the bad guy. Also covered when and where you can shoot. Michigan doesn't require you to retreat, but you don't shoot someone who is heading away from you. And what to say to the police when they get there. "I feared for my life and I want to see a lawyer." Nothing else. It was a good course. I'm old enough now and have my CPL. (That's a concealed pistol license. Doesn't allow you to carry other kinds of weapons.) May The Sheep Be With You
In NC the class is a joke, in fact the instructor told us to try to stay awake. Done the field portion, a blind man could pass. We are a open carry state and to be honest other than being able to buy pistols on the spot I don't see the advantage of it. If I had my time to do over I'd took the $200 it cost me and put it toward something to carry. The one thing the instructor drilled in us was to shoot to kill, dead man can't tell his side of the story. Alhough true, i just found it in poor taste the way he kept on referencing that statement.
