For the past couple years I have been carrying cancelled pistol while archery hintimg. The farm I hunt has had a mamma bear with Cubs that frequently is on the property. I figure that in the unlikely but potentially dangerous event I found myself between mom and babies I would rather have a firearm to better my chances. This made me to think how many others carry a firearm out in the woods with them during bow season? Sent from my XT1635-01 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app

I open carry now because of the tree huggers wanting wolves to take over our state, I have been encircled by wolve, s last year I have had deer eaton by wolves within an hour of being arrowed while I wait to track , I hear them howl most every evening while on stand , You outta see the wolve killed deer sites after spring thaw ! 22 mag by the way
Even though we hunt private property and we do carry, it is illegal in Pa. and it is a can of worms!!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I'm about 98% sure it is illegal to carry a firearm while bow hunting in Iowa. Otherwise I would carry, like I do every other day. But it is not worth my hunting license. Hopefully that law changes in the future as I do hunt private land and have dealt with the occasional trespasser.
Same with the open carry, no need for me to conceal it. When I hunt my buddies property in northern NH I almost always carry.
Illegal here in Missouri, however, MDC does have a proposed change to the law in the works for next year. There are some big kitties here, but I don't really worry too often where I hunt. The legal option would be nice tho.
I have carried on some hunts, mostly because of two legged critters. Make sure you know your local laws. Concealed vs open carry. Also make sure your CCP is valid in the state/location you carrying.
Day before last shotgun season At the farm down south (southern Illinois), a couple coon hunters and their hounds got hunted by a huge pack of coyotes. They are smart boogers. They knew they had to separate the dogs first so they did just that. Taunting them until they ignored commands from their handlers. The hunters did manage to kill 5 of the coyotes but they said there had to be 15 of them at least. It didn't turn out so good for the dogs and the hunters ran out of ammo. They were beating the coyotes with their guns but had to retreat. One dog got killed by the coyotes if I remember right and the other one got hit by a car while he was running away. I'm pretty sure they both died. This is the first time I've heard of a pack of coyotes being so bold. I didn't even believe it at first but it came from a very credible source (the local GW). I've heard stories of hogs attacking people and cougar sightings in southern Illinois but I had never even thought about carrying until I heard this story. Wish they would make it legal in Illinois. Until then I just keep my Benchmade Bushcrafter easily accessible. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I originally got into bowhunting for the challenge of being a bit more primitive, even though today's compound bows aren't exactly what I would call primitive. The places I hunt have coyotes, bears, and bobcats, but I get a bit of a thrill walking through the woods in the dark and wondering what is making some of the noises that I hear. If I ever have a run-in with a bear or pack of coyotes, I would probably change my mind, but I love the thought that all I have to protect myself is a bow and a knife...
Walked on to many pissed off hogs here in tx. Hearing them growl and chomp their jaws at you will make the hair on your neck stand up. I take no chances and carry my pistol with me at all times.
Illegal in CT. Sucks because I go deep, and have seen plenty of sign of bears, and have been circled by coyotes on my walk in at 4am. My father in law says he'd rather get judged by 12 then carried by six. But that's a federal offense, if I get caught, I won't be able to hunt again. I'll take my chances. I always carry a razor sharp spear with me...LOL better than nothing
I don't carry when I hunt but if I didn't feel safe I certainly would. 99% of my hunting is on my property and I have been pretty fortunate to not have too many run in's with trespassers.
