What are you guys using for anti-virus.....etc?

I bought a new computer, recently, and the Norton that came with it is running out (today). I am a computer stooge.....and I want to protect my investment (and my files/photos).

    Help.

Besides having Norton 360, I recently downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy for free.

    Bruce:

Is that an "either-or"? Again...I'm a stooge at this stuff.

Is this (ONE of those) all I would need (assuming I got the internet protection, also)?

    Thanks.

    Abstinence is the best policy.

Yes, either-or and yes, it should be all you need. As with any AV stuff just make sure it stays up-to-date and it should be able to update itself automatically.

McAffe security suite and MS Defender for spyware - I am lucky that DoD has a enterprise agreement for the McAfee...and Symantec if I want it - so I get it free since I access DoD systems via my home computer(s).

I have Symantec running on the other 4 computers in the house....and Defender on them also.

X2 on Kaspersky. It has one of the highest detection rates.

Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Ad-ware to help remove/detect spyware.

    Kaspersky isn't a bad product.

We use NOD32 for all of our business and educational clients. We have had great luck with it over the past 3-4 years. You can find it at www.eset.com

When it comes to not getting viruses/malware/etc the best practice is not to click on anything you don't know what it is or where it came from. If you get or see any sort of pop-up windows close them immediately. And DON'T click on the "CLOSE" button in the middle of the screen. Hit the Red X in the corner, or right-click the window in your task bar and close it. Try not to visit sites you don't know about, and don't install anything.

FWIW I've always been told just to run one anti-virus product(Incase you ever decide to switch)

I run AVG free also... I Got an infection also... Tried to live stream a video and got my butt handed to me... Between avg and Windows Defender, (which I too am a stooge and I'm not really sure if windows defender is a anti-virus or not) anywho they took care of it.

+1 -- I've never heard a negative thing said about AVG. It works great and costs nothing.

+1 on the McAfee products. I'm running McAfee Security Suite, and I have never had a problem. (fingers crossed.... ;) )

I wouldn't put Norton on a PC if you paid me. Major, major, memory hog and so intrusive, it darn near wants to take total control of your PC! Norton also writes tons of registry entries and even writes to the boot sector of the hard drive! It is a serious b*tch to try and uninstall. Been there, done that.
