I was about as close as one can get to purchase a tractor today, but we couldn't come together on a price and who knows maybe he will call back. I was wondering where are common sites beside craigs list people have used to search for tractors? Maybe some other tips on purchasing a tractor.

    Buying used?

Make sure its a serviceable machine with good parts and dealer support.
Avoid anything that's rare or odd
Oil leaks aren't the end of the world as long as the PTO is dry and the main seals at both ends of the engine are dry.
Run it to operating temp, come back the next morning and look for leaks
    Operational gauges
Oils free from debris, engine and hydraulic.
Cold starting ability. If you show up to look at one that's been warmed up...run.
    Power steering function
    Tire condition
    Engine smoke, excessive or not

Some great info for you so far...I can't overemphasize the importance of a good dealer nearby. Stuff breaks, no matter who makes it. Having local parts and service support can be really central to a good ownership experience. I read lots of stories on the tractor forums I frequent about "great deals" that weren't so great once the new owner figured out they'd be waiting for 2 or 3 months for a part to be shipped from overseas.

There are some awesome deals out there for both new and used...good luck in your search.

Yeah The particular tractor I am looking at is a (2009)Simplicity Leagacy XL 4x4 with the 27 horse Kawasaki liquid cold engine(gas) It has the 3 point and rear PTO. It also has a 60 belly mower. Hour meter is not working that's my biggest concern. I've driven it everything works it's a little beat up, but still looks ok. He told me they sold the tractor new to the guy in 2009 and he traded in on a new one. I brought $5,200 with me and he would come down from the 5,400. It's also worth noting it's been sitting at the dealership for at least 3 weeks.

We bought an older Deutz-Allis. What's freaking German nightmare. No parts anywhere in a 100mi radius. We have to travel 200mi to maybe find a scrap part from a boneyard. Air cooled with a slightly oversized brush hog for the pto so constantly runs hot. Pita!

We will be buying either a kubota or deere within the next year or so.

    Covey got it right.
Definitely agree with if it's been warmed up before you get there.
We've been lucky with our purchases from Craigslist. You just need to do your homework. We went with Deere due to the availability of parts

I highly recommend Kubota. JD is a top brand but personally I don't love anything JD that I've ever owned. I've worked on quite a bit of older JD stuff and they always seem to find a way to design things poorly to have to work on. Anything I have to uncouple a front mount rotary hydraulic pump on to change out a fan belt gets a cussing from me. No idea if the newer stuff is like that or not.

All we run is John Deere and haven't had any major issues with anything. Curious myself about Kubota tractors.

I don't have a lot of experience owning Kubota tractors, I own a little 27hp garden tractor I think I've owned since new three years ago. It's been perfect and seems simple enough. I like how they've designed stuff on it for maintenance. I'd certainly buy another one and I'd like to have a full sized tractor. I've been around a lot of the Kubotas and of those they've all been very efficient, even old ones.

You can't beat a kubota as far as a utility tractor.never owned one but know enough who have. They just keep going and going and like you said they are maintenance friendly. Everyone I know that has one loves them. I'll be looking at at least something in the 50hp range with a bucket and brush hog. Already have a nice sprayer

That's a good universal size. My little 27hp thinks it's a farm tractor, lol. I run a 5' tiller and a 6' finish mower on it. I had to put a weight kit on the front because the mower was heavy enough that the front end would get light on it when I lifted the mower. I'd like to have a loader and a mid mount deck on it but I'll probably trade it in on a new and bigger one before I get them added to this one.

I have a small New Holland tz24 diesel with a belly mower and looking to get a rear tiller. The case, jd,kubota and new holland are the exact same tractor. My buddy Darrel has a Kubota with the bucket and back hoe attachment and its pretty sweet he bought it with all the addons for like 18k new.

I wish I had the 18k to purchase a compact with all the goodies. I have a bout 7k to try and get something that will last a while. I'm maybe considering just saving for another year and watching the used market. I may just bit the bullet and get a small loan and get exactly what I want, but I need to get the wife on board with it.

No sense in buying one now and regretting the decision later. If you're going to do it, do it right. I had a tight budget but I took advantage of Kubota's zero interest promotion and couldn't be more happy.

I've just talked with a kioti dealer. I can get the 2210 diesal(22hp) with a loader, and a 60 inch belly mower for 13,300. That seems like a better option then weeding through all these used unit and hoping I find a good one. Now I just have to get the wife on board... Tips?

I told my wife how much money it would save us from renting for doing things around our property and the fact they hold there value so good as well. The deal breaker was to also have a ad on CL for doing small jobs with it and since I have had it I have coved all my payments and more doing this. Since then she even let me upgrade to a bigger tractor.
