Newbie question here but why around scrapes are the bucks looking up at the branch on the tree? I under stand it is common practice to put estrus in the scrape during rut but what do we the hunter put on the tree or the deer itself?

It's called a licking branch that there looking at. Lot of times they'll rub this branch with their face and or even bite It and lick It. They have glands on their face that puts scent on this branch. It's a communicating kind of thing. You'll notice that every time you find a scrape there's always a branch above It.
