hey guys, i'm a junior this year and my parents keep stressing me to start thinking about what i wanna do/where i want to go. I am considering Creighton University or U of Iowa.. The one thing i do not know is what i wanna do. I love being outdoors and hunting/fishing but i also want to make good money :D do you guys know any career options for me? 4.0 GPA and i haven't taken my ACT's yet.. please let me know.. thanks, Nick
Yeah, so does every country boy in the entire country. Want realistic advice? Go for a solid career. Engineering, business, pre-Med, etc if you want to make good money. It might not be your love, but if you have good money, you will be able to enjoy hunting and fishing.
Oh, and if you are a junior, you need to hurry up and take that ACT. You should have taken it several times already. You know you can take it as many times as you want, right? And they only look at your highest score.
I'm currently a Sophmore at South Dakota State University studying Wildlfe And Fisheries sciences. I love it but you do not get payed that well. Your free to PM any questions.
You can either do something you love (wildlife biologist) and not make a ton of $, or do something that allows you the time and $ to do what you love in your free time. Accounting or IT is always going to be a solid career with great earning potential. Best of luck.
You may want to considering a different field all together if you have a passion for the outdoors. Point being when something becomes a job the person more often than not loses the passion for it. I have a couple friends that became game wardens. One in CO and the other in KS. Both of them have completely lost interest in any outdoor activity. I have a degree in Information Technology. It's worked out well for me. I work from home and don't have a set working hours. My job is strictly results based. Sometimes I work 10 hours in a week, and others I work 80. Sometimes I work all day, sometimes all night. Sometimes both day and night...... Or sometimes not at all. It sounds really awesome doesn't it? It can be! At the same time plan on being out there by yourself quite a bit because everyone else is working.
Whatever you choose to start with, you will change your major...I started in Natural Resource Management, then switched to Business Management, then to Personal Finance (still finished in 4 years)....now I'm a business education teacher, and coach. Do some research and see what kind of jobs look promising for the future, and good luck! Pick a career you will enjoy, not a job you have to go to...
Im a senior in high school, and i plan on attending alpena community college in michigan to become a utility technician. pays great and will still allows me to hunt and fish.
By this logic just take whatever you want to do, don't do that and you'll end up back there. Flip the odds!!
thanks for all the responses guys.. my parents are really pushing me to med school. we're going to go on a college visit to Iowa State University i think and look into Pre-Vet school.. i just want the weekends off.
I will be done with my business management degree next fall. I cant wait. I picked this field because it is fairly broad and I would like to eventually open up my own business. Also with this degree I have a lot of opportunities with my current employer.
Most don't realize the dedication it takes to go through a professional school. Don't expect much of a life outside of school for 6-8 years if you choose this path... And don't choose it for the money. No money is worth hating your job everyday. That being said, life is about attitude and if you can learn to like a job, the healthcare field is booming right now from every angle you choose to enter it. I'm halfway through my first year of Pharmacy school after undergrad and had no idea how much time you must invest into school. It sucks to be honest lol, just keep reminding myself that I enjoy what I do and the pay/Job security will be worth it in the end.
Leinen, whatever you do, FOCUS in college. Coming from a guy who put school on the backburner and just made it through, I am telling you to really focus and to dream big. Attack your dreams with full vigor and passion. Take advantage of what a solid GPA and networking with the right people will do for you and your future. Best of luck to you.
Haven't been on a clinical rotation yet but love retail (most aspects). I really enjoy compounding pharmacy, helps add flavor to the day making each prescription by hand vs transferring from a big bottle to a smaller bottle. We make everything from hydrocodone capsules to lidocaine suppositories to testosterone creams. Every day is different. Battling insurance companies on the compensation for compounded scripts is so frustrating though that it may not be worth it. I don't think from what I've heard that I will enjoy clinical pharmacy. The pay is substantially less, and it is a lot of reading lab values and interpreting how to approach drug therapy. Very challenging field that I feel is underappreciated and undercompensated. For the first 5 years out of school atleast, I will work chain retail such as Walgreens for the substantial pay increase to help work off these loans. Eventually I want to end up in a smaller independent compounding type setting. I'll see where god leads me in a few years, for now I'm just trying to keep my mind open.
Good Luck man, a friend of mine finished up a few years ago....and lets just say hes doing pretty good for himself now.
Gotcha...not too many pharmacists (including my wife) thoroughly enjoy retail...she did enjoy her compounding rotations.
I'm also a student at South Dakota State University. Great school with an Awesome Wildlife/Fisheries Program. The pay isn't the greatest but when you have to do something for the rest of your life would you rather be doing something you absolutley hate for the rest of your life and make pretty good money or would you want to wake up every morning wanting to go to work and make average money. Imo i pick doing something i love to do.
my sister is working retail and clinical at the moment. she says clinical is VERY boring compared to retail.
