Collaring Deer in My Neck of the Woods

Looks like I'll be getting some collared deer on my cameras this season. I'd love to ride along and watch the process!

The question is whether the science supports the decision. Or simply, can deer and moose co-exist?

"We don't have anything hard on that but we're doing a lot of research here now," said Rusch. "But most moose managers feel any concentration of wintering moose and deer would be negative and would pass brain worm along. Can we make a direct correlation? No, not at this time."

Rusch did say that NRRI is in the process of studying deer in the Ely area and in the moose range.

He said deer will be trapped and collared this winter in two areas, near Isabella and in the Eagles Nest, Twin, Mitchell and Putnam lakes area.

According to the NRRI, 14 deer have been collared in the Isabella area already.

Rusch said the science is still in the works but from flying over northeast Minnesota looking for moose, he believes there is a connection.

"Wherever you have winter deer concentrations you don't have moose. On the whole Fernberg corridor we're not seeing moose like we used to," said Rusch.
