I am trying to keep up my running here in the cold weather. I have been running in 20-30 degree weather here the last two weeks. I am experiencing some bronchial irritation the following day after I run in the cold. I cough and I start getting the whole head cold feeling for a bit the following day. This has never happened to me but I am not getting any younger so maybe that is part of it.

Do any of you wear anything to help combat the cold air from getting into your lungs? Any other cold weather running tips would be appreciated.

Obviously I don't have to deal with the cold as much as you guys, but it's good to do a bit of exercise indoors to get your heart rate up before you step out to run. I like to do 5 quick sets of push-ups. It'll help prevent the chest burn during the run.

As for the next day effects, I don't have much for you there. I always have a runny nose the day after a long run in the cold weather. I've just grown to accept it.

Thanks Hooker. I will try the inside warm-up tomorrow.

i have a neoprene facemask that I wear on really cold running days. That seems to make a big difference. I haven't busted it out yet this year. Last nights run was in the upper 20's with wind chills in the mid-teens. Probably right on the border for me using it, but after the 1st mile I was warmed up pretty good.

Oh man, I couldn't imagine running in that thing.

But then again, it will only get in the 20s here about 10x a year.

Wear a face mast and keep your mouth shut when you are running. Gives the air a bi5 more of a chance to warm.

Yes Teejay, I use the nose exhale thing in the woods when I need to warm up a bit. I need to buy a facemask to help keep my lungs warm. I really thought I was getting a cold this morning, again. I want no part of getting sick. THANKS guys!
