With temps at a balmy 25 yesterday, the deer waited til after dark to move. I saw 4 bucks after dark, including two 3.5 yr bucks heading towards the alfalfa after shooting light was gone. Todays high was 5 and I'm optimistic I may see more daylight movement. Heading to sit by an alfalfa field in a few minutes. There are few things I enjoy more than seeing a buck in the snow as his breath floats into the sky like smoke from a chimney. I love this time of year! good luck to everyone who hunts the cold.
Took my 6 year old along tonight so we had to go to the tower so she wouldn't freeze. Towards last light a solid 3.5 yr 8 point steps out. Brooklin is begging me to shoot it but I'm not so sure. All of a sudden out comes a much taller buck. I quickly grab the muzzy (no bow during gun season here) and put it on him just to see frost on my scope. I wiped it away quickly and put it back up to find the scope was turned all the way down. ( he is 80 yds) I turn it up and put it back on him just in time for him to disappear back into the trees. I walked back to the house with a disappointed , but still very excited daughter. It was a fun in hunt. We have 2 more days of single digits here, I may have to sneak away from work early for a couple of evening sits before it warms back up and the bucks go nocturnal again.
Your daughter most be a tough little cookie !! Cool getting to experience your hunt with your daughter. Soon you two will be experiencing her hunts which is even better. Good luck if you get to sneak away from work !! Tim
same here BEN, i've never hunted but a day or two the second Season any hints or ideas besides a food sorce.
thanks for the luck! i am anxious to hunt my plot now that food is dwindling that the deer didnt really touch early season. hopefully some good bucks, trail cams just show em passing thru
I saw bucks moving during the day yesterday after the temps warmed up. Mainly after 11 am. Bucks were grouped up and had zero interest in the does. They are focusing on food digging 10 inches down in the snow to get at our clover.
Nikon makes a lens wipe called No Fog. I use it on all my optics up here and it totally prevents this from happening, water won't collect on it. Just a tip from one cold weather hunter to another.
Thanks for that tip !!!! With all the wet weather we have been having the last two years... fogging up binocs, the spotting scope and trail cam has been a real pain. Once my binocs are frosted up in this cold weather they are done for the hunt My fingers are too big to wipe them without turning the eye relief covers down. I am afraid to turn them since it is so cold that it may crack or break them. Thanks again !!!!! Tim
