Congrats on the bull. A guy that hunts on one of the properties I hunt on is heading out there the 3rd week of Oct.
You have become an elk hunting machine Matt!! You really have!!! My hats off to you and then some!! Way to get it done and congratulations!! Also well done on the close encounters! It sure can be done.
Matt... what a great write up of your 2014 elk hunt. I felt liked I was sitting beside you on that hunt. You have a gift for writing. Congratulations again on this bull and thanks for sharing a great hunt adventure and beautiful photos. Your elk hunting mentor did well ! Huck you should be proud.
I'd guess around 35lbs...if you had the whole cape for a mount it could be double that. I grew up singing every John Denver song there is - as soon as we can see the mountains Dad pops in his JD CD's and we sing them all week long - well except when the terrible gravel roads make my CD player skip non-stop John Denver was spot on...there is magic in those mountains! I shot muzzy for 15years but few years back switched to Carbon Express Torrid SS - I bought these heads years ago at Walmart just to use on turkeys, but ended up trying them on deer...and well, I have yet to even blood trail my 2 elk, multiple deer, or turkey...all drop within sight or hearing. No downside yet (except I'm losing my blood tracking capabilities) Dan - that would be great! That means a lot Steve, thanks! Without Huck...I'd still be looking at Elk magazines in IL just daydreaming... Thanks for all the great comments everyone!
Wow, that was a GREAT read. As if the fire wasn't already lit on me wanting to get out west! Congratulations on great bull, and what a rush those encounters had to have been!
Well Done Matt on a fine write-up and Congratulations on that beauty of a 5x5, you got it done again........ I tip my hat to you Matt, I really do! Wish I could have gotten a picture of the 7x7 Herd Bull or even better, I wish I could have dropped him, but he outsmarted me on 4 occasions........ God has other plans for Him :/ Again, Congrats Buddy
Not yet...for a few reasons: 1-no room to display a mount at home 2-the cost would pay for another year's hunt 3-I really like the euro mount look that I have This year's bull had a beautiful cape and coloring...would have made nice mount...hoping one day I get one that blows these 2 away and forces me to mount it Thanks Dave! I knew you'd get into some back there...your experience with that herd bull is priceless!
Great story Matt. Thanks for sharing. Your hunts always get me missing CO and unit Elk hunting. Glad to see you put another one down. Kilboars Hunt Club
Indeed... I broke down on the river a couple weeks ago and didn't know how to get my Outboard going. I called Dad... he'd had the same thing happen to him once and knew what to do. I was so proud of him at that moment.
