I recently went out to the property I hunt in Virginia. As I was looking for deer sign, I came across a spot on the ground, under tall soft pines, that had multiple clumps of deer hair scattered in a 3x3 fort square area. I did not take photos, for I had no camera. I have posted a picture from the internet, of what it looked like. Any guess' by my fellow hunters on what may have happened here? I saw dozens of clumps like the one shown. Unknown.jpeg

Probably a coyote or another predator got themselves a meal

I'd figure that without saying, that would be my conclusion also. But has anyone seen something like this?

I see quite a few if them while out shed hunting, especially out in places there are a ton of coyotes.

Yup same here. I've seen it a few times last year Under a soft pine, plenty of coyote tracks and dog/coyote poo and deer fur and a deer jawbone.

Either yotes or it is an old animal bedding and lost a hunk of hair.

Deer will lose hair too. I find tons of hair in every fresh bed I find in the spring as they start to lose their winter coat. But they shouldn't be doing that yet. Not here anyway.

I saw a spot tonight, ona game trail, that looked like some one had brushed out a shedding dog, but it was belly hair from a deer. No blood, no skin, no meat, just mats of hair. This is in early Oct., so shedding doesn’t make sense.

It was out in the open in the middle of a game trail about 15 feet off a human access path.

Prior to the hunting season when there is less stress, and in some cases even during hunting season, deer will bed just like that to monitor human pressure.

    Did it looks like this?
