I have a small plot that the grass has about taken over. Its probably only got about 20% clover left. Long story short, I'm not in a position to redo the entire thing right now to do it right. Would it make sense to over seed it as a temporary fix to try and boost up the clover % in the plot? Any suggestions?
My guess is that you would be wasting your time and money. I would wait until you can start a new stand of clover. There are herbicides that will kill off the grasses and leave the clover. In our area, a clover seeding is only good for about 4 or 5 years max.
There is a product called "Grass Getter" which is actually the same product as the old "Poast" product that will clean that grass out and not harm the remaining clover. Grass Getter Herbicide Another product called "Arrow" which is a generic form of "Select"... does the same thing and is cheaper than the Poast. I list this one second because I don't know if you have to have a Chemical applicators license to buy it or not. I carry an applicators license in both MO and KS so it's not a problem for me but I don't know about other states...anyone interested can call and find out: Arrow 2EC Herbicide - 1 Gallon (Select 2EC) 26.4% Clethodim [66222-60] - $79.95 : Keystone Pest Solutions, Low price herbicides and pesticides I don't think it would be a waste of time, spray the grass out and go ahead and throw some seed in there the same day while you're there, it won't hurt anything. I'd recommend crimson clover though as it'll come in faster and last better through cold...just keep in mind it's an annual so it won't permanently replace the perenial clover.
Ya spray it for grasses. There is a another product called "Grass Beater" by Bonide. https://www.google.com/search?q=bonide+grass+beater&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-aSame stuff as "arrest" from Whitetail Institute. So I would spray it for grasses and overseed some more clover. Then frost some more in spring. Then keep up with the mowing if you could and spray it again next spring before you cut your grass at home I say.
