Got a question and a little story. figured no need for 2 posts when 1 will do.

First the question, how often do you wash your hunting gear during the season? I have a long walk in and out and it's almost impossible not to sweat any. I will not hunt for the next 4 days. Should I wash and go through my descenting rituals again, or just let them set in my cedar box and spray em down?

Now on to the story. Had a good wind today and with the rain it was easy to walk and not make noise so I decided to take the long way out of the woods today. Walking the property line of the public ground I bumped 2 nice size does. 1 stopped 15 yd broadside and stared at me for 30 seconds, only on the wrong side of the fence. I'm not going to lie and say I didnt think about drawing back, but then the better side of my kicked in and said no, it's a long season, got plenty of time to smack one. So I figure my ethics were tested today and I passed.

with four days, I would wash again. If you don't have time to wash just spray and pray!

As far as the ethics story: we all are presented with situations in life that can cause us to question our moral code. I'm glad you showed good character and for that, I would go hunting with you anytime. You will make more in life passing on a immoral opportunity than you will if you capitalize on it. Congrats.

I feel pretty good about it. It was tough after setting 4 days and not seeing any thing and come that close to one.

I'll probably wash tonight and then put them back in the cedar box then.

You did the right thing! I always ask myself how would I feel if that was my land. If you would be pissed off if someone did that on your land then I wouldnt do it. For your question i wash my base layer every weekend when im done hunting. They outer layer gets washed about once a month. God luck!

Wash, might as well. Good job on choosing the eithical sportsman route, over what gives all of us a bad name.

Isn't saying "good job" for not poaching the same as saying "good job" for taking care of your kids?

    1) Washing hunting gear -

I'll hunt probably a maximum of 6 sits (3 morning & evening sits) before washing my gear. This includes base layers and clothes that I'm likely to sweat in (warm weather tops & pants, hats, gloves, socks). Between washes i'll spray everything down with scent-a-way spray and let it air dry then store in a scent-proof clothing bag with some scent wafers (dirt) or leaves.

If it's really warm out when I hunt, 70 degrees +, i'll wash every three sits and i'll be generous with the spray.

When it gets cold, I rarely wash my outer layers (jacket/parka/bibs), just spray them down and air dry, then store in a bag. I'll focus more on the base layers and hats/gloves/socks. I let my boots air out outside before storing them in a rubbermade tub with some leaves. Also, don't forget about any backpack or other fabric material that may pick up unwanted scent. I spray those down too.

    2) You probably wouldn't have even gotten to full draw before the doe bolted. If she was looking right at you - she saw movement and probably made your outline and was waiting to see if you moved again. Then she would have taken off. You would have just educated that doe for the next time you ran into her which makes it more likely you'll get busted again if you come across that same deer and slip up.

That being said - You did what's right.

    I think so.

After seeing so many trespassing threads, I'll say thanks for not poaching instead :)

Yes, but we weren't really saying "Good Job". It was an opportunity for him to share a story about a hunt where he had conflicting emotions. Any new hunters, or kids reading this can take the responses we give and hopefully find some wisdom in them. So, my response wasn't just for the OP, but for everyone/anyone reading the post.

I was going to stab an employee in the face with a pen today because he didn't do his job, but I decided not to.

Now I'll wait for someone to tell me I did a good job.

I wash mine once a week (after about 3-4 hunts). Good job on resisting the temptation.

Good job Vito. Way to not be one of those crazy people we hear about on the news weekly.

Thanks. I mean, he had all week to get his work done. I probably should have just stabbed him with the pen. Temptations can be tough to deal with. In the end, I'm glad I did the right thing. <patting self on back>

The choice was really yours all the way. I'm glad your happy with the decision you made. I would have made the same one based on your analogy. :)

Surprisingly, only a handful of times. Every once and a while I run across someone that takes an internet forum too seriously.

Yea, I think the first thing I learned here was to generally disregard your comments.
