When we first moved back to MD from MS I boiled one one the front porch of the townhouse we were living in. The neighbors didn't think to highly of the smell either. I thought my wife was going to kill me when she got home and saw what I was doing with her turkey fryer!
Uh oh.... :D I'm lucky. My wife would just come home, take a look and say "Well, looks like I'm getting a new one."
Guys prolly late by now, but don't let water boil...bubble a touch yeah no biggy but if it boils everything gets more brittle. Wish I never would have done my very first one with a boil...last one I slow simmered for a LONG time, pulled and picked off....put back in and repeated. Turned out much better.
Also if you want a mounting set, these guys put out good stuff and I loved the one I got from them...may be getting a few more. Pretty simple to make yourself to but I didn't wanna take the time. </title> <meta name="robots" content="index,follow" /> <meta name="GOOGLEBOT" content="INDEX, FOLLOW" /> <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.taxidermistwoodshop.com" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4
I saw something different the other day, it was a european mount with the skull wet dipped in camo pattern. It was really neat looking.
Man Tony, that's a bummer you had to find the deer like that. But, at least you are the one that found it. That should make a sweet euro mount. I'm fixing to start working on miy wife's 8 point that she killed the other day. I usually scrape as much meat off as possible and boil until the meat starts to look kind of cooked then take a power washer to the skull. It makes everything so much easier. I'm ready to see some pics when you get done, that's a very cool rack.
Yeah, slow simmer is the way to go. I should have waited until morning to start it, the pan I'm using is a big fish fry pan. It's rather dented and dished out on the bottom so doesn't transfer heat very well on a flat top stove. Couldn't get a boil if I wanted to, going to take a lot longer than my last one. Also have the camo arrowhead plaque from the guys you linked to. Nice quality and straight forward design.
Question... what do you do about the brains? I have this 8 point to do and didn't know what to do about them.
I've only done one prior to this one. I jusfft simmered it until everything just fell and scraped off. Used. A wooden spoon handle to scrape and loosen up the brains. Once it was pretty well cleaned up I took it to a car wash and blasted the rest out as well as the sinus cavities and such.
That sounds like a winner. Looking forward to pics. I am thinking of mounting mine on a 1 inch dowel and a table top plaque.
