This is very true, Suspension trauma is an awful way to go. I think about it often and am still guilty of not carrying one with me. Think I'm gonna tie wrap one to my harness, so it's always there!

Good points. Mine stays in my hunting pants left pocket all the time. Why left? Just because that's where I put and now always put in there so I don't have to think where it is if I ever need it.

Another thing, climber or hang on, is a lot of people put their tree strap too low. It should just be taut when sitting down so you can't fall below you platform.

Earlyin just curious. You said sit and climb? Was that a lone wolf that dropped away from you? I have 2 wolves and several friends who own them and none of us have ever had an issue with top or bottom falling even on ice covered beech trees.

Yes, a LW sit and climb. This was 15 years ago, when I was learning the ins and outs of using the stand. It didn't come with the straps that secure the seat section to the platform section, and I wasn't aware of their importance until that episode. One foot slipped from the platform while climbing, and that was it. But, the stand only dropped about 4 feet down, then it grabbed.
I imagine those straps come with it now? lol

Agreed! And check and change the straps frequently. These 2 were tethered together but when it fell, the strap broke because it was old.

As inconvenient as the safety gear can be........

    I "NEED" it.

Sort of like a smoke detector..................

Another thing is to be aware of the type of tree you are climbing. Too shaggy of bark like some hickorys and maples will break away and just snag your cable anyway. Too smooth and hard like some other maples and such and your teeth wont bite the tree making these accidents more possible.

Tree rope. Glad you are taking all the necessary precautions to be safe out there. It amazes me that guys still get into stands without any safety harness at all.

The look I give when someone says they don't wear a harness because it's uncomfortable.... How effin' comfortable is a wheelchair for life? Or having a nurse change your diaper for you?
