If all works out right, I will be in the market for a new climber in the next couple weeks. Does anyone have a recommendation for one in the $200-$250 range. I know its a little low, but you know...rough times.

Have you used the open shot? It looks like it would be a pain in the ass to climb with. But I did notice it has a flip up seat which would be a plus.

Deerslayer7- The goliath is still a little to much but I will also check out the viper

This would be my issue. The climber I used in the past has the rail which made climbing very easy. I will say it also added a bit of security (in my head mostly) while perched 20 feet up. But then again, I have been considering an open design thinking it might conceal me better. I imagine it would take a good bit of upper body strength to use it.

I bought the equalizer this year and love it. I haven't hunted out of it, but I have been practicing climbing and setting up and it's a breeze. What I like most is the ability to adjust the stand once at desire height without being an acrobat. Cons - it doesn't pack flat, which would be nice.

I was basically in the same boat as you, as far as not wanting to spend more then $250 for a climber.
I ended up going with the Loggy Bayou Mega Transformer. I got it brand new along with extas like a foot rest, 20ft pull up rope and some traction stickers that I wish I wouldnt have got because there is no need for the traction stickers for $215 TMD!!! I ordred directly from Loggy Bayou the stand itself is I think $159 plus shipping, the foot rest I think is $11, the pull up rope was $2

Positives: Folds Flat(very easy adjusts up with a bolt/wingnut).....Carries Nicely.........Optional removable front bar or adjusts out from climbing position another 4"(nice feature)..........Silent Skin Mossy Oak Dipped Camo(looks sharp IMO)..............Easy to use cable system(alot asier to use then Summits IMO)........Plenty of Room(for 5'11" 220lbs)..........Grips tree good.........Good customer service...It says 22lbs but it feels lighter then my old API that is supposed to be 19lbs??

Negatives: The removable front bar came bent(factory bend) from package and made it hard to get in/out of the holes but I called up Loggy Bayou and they sent me a new one with no questions asked and it fits nice.............The removable bar uses two pins that could potentially be a pain, in the dark trying to find the holes to adjust the bar?..................The seat is comfortable but it straps on by the strap on the one side connecting to the one on the other side in the middle of the bottom of the seat which makes it kinda stiff to move around..................when climbing, the seat is too stiff and your knees hit it causing you not to be able to move for very long strides but I just unbuckle the front strap and push it back and you have more then enough room but then you have to reconnect the strap once in the tree(its a hassle now but I think it will be fine once the straps get worn in a little bit, I have only climbed with it once)........other then that I am completely happy with the stand as of now!!

I would buy another one at the price of $215 any day of the week!! I figure if the straps never stretc and the seat gives me a fit I will someday buy a Summit Seat and strap on it and be done with it, even if I did it now I would still only have $250 in the whole set-up!!

I hope I helped you find something that may fit you? If you have any more questions I will be more then happy to give my honest answer on any of them!!

I have a Goliath and love it. It think it was $265 to my door on E-bay. If you are going to spend over $200, why not get what you really want that is not really that much more. My guess is you will wish you would of got the Viper or Goliath in a few years anyway and will have to spend the money again. My 2 cents.

I own a Summit Viper and its a very nice climber. If I had to do it over again I would purchase one without the shooting rail.

I have the Equalizer, and will not buy another brand anytime soon.

I can sit towards the tree (with backrest), and away from the tree. NEVER AGAIN will I have to "guess" how skinny the tree gets up top. With 12" of adjustment, I'm sitting SAFE, and comfortable every hunt. All that said, I'd say it is one of the most silent and SAFE treestands, handsdown.

Pricey? Yes. But, I can promise you the perceived value after a season will be higher.

I was in the same boat (decided I needed to spend the money on some home renovations instead), but if this is solely a bowhunting stand, I would give a serious look at the Open Shot. Lightweight, seat flips up, packs nicely, and it's within your budget. If the flip up seat is not a necessity for you, the Realtree Bushmaster is basically a Summit OS without the flip up seat (and a bit more weight). If money can be stretched, I would give a hard look at the LW though. The one piece platform, tight packing, and traction straps make it a very nice bowhunting stand.

Only negative I can see to not having a rail is it being harder on the forearms to climb, but hey, it's excercise, right;)
