Plannin on plantin buckwheat for spring an summer an clover chicory for a fall kill plot, the seed bed is clay bout an inch or so down from the top of the surface. Is this goin to cause more headaches then anythin or will I be ok?
Clay isn't good or bad. It is just different. It has its pros and cons. If it is a naturally very wet area of your land it can be bad. If its a dryer area it should be just fine. Also the clay holds moisture during times if drought. It all depends. I have heavy clay on my land and ive made sure to only put plots on the higher parts on the land. I have clay in my back yard and got a real good stand of clover. I just planted wheat in the fall, and frost seeded clover in the spring. I put down double the recommended rate of seed, and it turned out as good as I could hope for. I have a doe family group using the plot every night, and 8 to 10 keep it mowed to about 6 inches. I did ferterlize and lime it as well.
