I hunt in a small lake town in Oklahoma that allows hunting deer within city limits. My question is does anyone else notice that they are the jumpiest deer in the world? The old men at work say they are tame but I can promise you they are far from it. They are so jumpy they spook themselves. Anyone have any advice or hunt city deer themselves that can help me out?

Backyard bucks!!! I love it...its a different game. I'm always using Google earth to look for new places to hunt. It gives you a better perspective overall of the land. I look for natural funnels , or a "pinch" . You don't need a ton of acreage to hold deer. You'd be surprised the places I've seen them hang out. I've had a lot of goodluck next to highways as well. Deer will follow the fences till there's a hole. One of my spots in particular has a fence that's set about 50 yards in the woods off the highway, I set up about 60 on the other side of that near a hole I found. As you've obviously heard before scent control is so important it cannot be stressed enough, as well as enter/exit strategies, and playing the wind. Be as quiet as possible. If your arrow is making noise on your draw it could draw attention. Or your gear, if your clothes make a lot of noise moving that's no good. That's all I got for now

I got my first deer this year and it was in my moms yard. He walked up to about 15 yards from the house. Was able to get him from the balcony while still in pajamas. Her house isn't necessarily in the city, more of a small town, but it is only a 5 acre lot surrounded by many other similar sized parcels up the road from a gas station, fire station, post office and other small businesses. So that is definitely more city that hiking hours into a field

If I had to guess I'd say that your harvest wasn't legal.

Hank brings up some good facts. In areas like this with "backyard bucks" use stuff like borders, walls, and fences to your vantage point. Perfect example is one place I hunt is a old farm that is a forest now, pretty much mixed growth mostly hard woods. All of the old field stone walls are still there and it is really a highway of deer that use the openings in the walls. I put a trail cam on one of these openings and got loads of pics. This area is probably 100 acres of forest surrounded by houses. You will be walking on the run ways and all the sudden you are in someone's back yard. But the place is thick with deer. The only downside I'm worried about is shooting a deer early one morning have it run off and die in someone's back yard or even worse pool. Walk up to him in full camo, arrow knocked, sneaking through the yard and have the whole family eating breakfast look out the window and see me. That wouldn't be good.

    Original story...

He didn't say he was shooting off his balcony in his original post... Which is fine... He did say it was private property... failed to mention that he was in his jammies. Priceless!!!
