I have bought tickets to a pro rodeo to watch bull riding. Doesn't mean I would let one of my kids do it.

People can think whatever they want. Did he fulfill his contractual obligations in relation to the signing bonus?

there are plenty of things that I would pay money to see or allow my kids to see that I wouldn't want them to do

what a dumb question...and one stolen from the Dan Patrick show at that

Not sure who Dan Patrick even is, but nothing is stolen or dumb about the question. Thanks for your input. :tu:

Saying you don't know who Dan Patrick is doesn't really help you when talking about sports. Just saying.

The signing bonus is for the length of the contract. Since he only played 1/4 of his contract, they can go after 3/4 of it.

If that is true then they should collect on 3/4ths of it.

I see that sentiment a lot about guys leaving school early... If you even make one year of salary as a professional athlete you can more than pay for your tuition to return for a degree later in life.

Sticking it out two more years for a degree leading to a $50-100k job when you have a $1mil+ contract dangling in front of you is NOT financially smart, IMO. Not saying he should continue in sports, but let's not act like his degree is his saving grace here.... The dude made over $600k last year alone.

You are missing my point. I bet he is glad he has his degree now so since he quit football he can do Something.

Meh... If I have $600k in earnings in the previous 12 months, I'm not transitioning into a job where I can use my History major from UW....

I understand what you are saying. But 600,000 (pre-tax) at the age of 24 isn't going to allow him to retire and I don't think he wants to do that anyway. With his whole life in front of him having a degree gives him a jump start on whatever he wants to do. That is all I am saying.

So what exactly would you do? Because 600K is not squat when it comes to retirement. The smartest thing he could do is get a job and invest every penny of his NFL earnings today. Then he could retire in his 40's or 50's and be comfortable.

He would buy rental property and hire someone to manage it for him while he travels the world.

Something I was taught as child by grandfather, who although he had no formal education was very successful in business and in life. He taught that when making business and money decisions i should strive to make the correct choice every time regardless of the outcome my past decisions.

I think that applies to this situation very well. The fact that this young man made 600K in a year shouldnt have a bearing on making the correct choice for future earning. Poor health especially at a young age following a short football carrier will eat up earnings faster then most people would imagine. Factor in quality of life issues and potential unknowns in regards to unknown contractual earnings. I cant help but think this guy made the correct choice.

I own income properties. If you think 600K will set him up for life to travel and hire a manager, you are seriously mistaken. It would do neither. Believe me, 600K is not very much money. It certainly is not enough to provide any kind of retirement. It would make around 30K per year. So, you would have to learn to travel the world on a poverty level budget. Not sure how much the property manager would get paid. lol

I would never suggest not working... Nor that it was enough to retire on... Not sure where these side tangents are coming from. I was just stating that unless he absolutely loves teaching there are unlimited things he could put half a million towards to earn him far more of an income than a teachers salary.

My mom was a teacher. My aunt is a teacher. It's a great job... But most history teachers wouldn't have chosen to go into that profession sitting on half a million dollars.

Being the first to retire in this way, he's a moron if he doesn't write a book about it honestly...
