I'm in the market for a truck. The guy down the road from me has a really clean 2007 Chevy avalanche 4 x 4 for sale that is in my budget. Jut wondering if any of y'all have had any experience with these trucks. I would like to hear the pros and cons. Thanks for the help.

I have an 04 with 166K on it and still running strong. One thing I would check is to run the VIN, or if you trust the owner check what it has for the suspension system. Some came out with the ride control set up which includes an on board air compressor for the rear shocks. Also has the auto dampening front shocks. Front shocks are around $300 each. Didn't price the rears. Fortunately mine had that stuff all removed and had standard shocks on it. Something to keep in mind.

Not sure what year Chevy quit the anti drop of the spare tire but mine had it on. Safety mechanism to prevent the spare from dropping in case the cable breaks. Mine was froze up solid. Had to block the spare up and use a torch to cut the safety tab off to get the spare down. Found that the hard way but was only 10 miles from home and had AAA.

The stock tires are nothing more than over sized car tires. I put on 8 plys and dropped the air pressure down 3 pounds. No noticeable difference in ride but handles a lot better, 70K mile tires and a lot more puncture proof. Limestone rock roads are hard on tires which we have up here.

Box is a little small if you do much hauling but it is about 95% water and dust proof with the cover sections on. A standard wood pallet will just go in with a couple inches to spare on the sides.

I had 3 of them and LOVE them. If 2006 hadn't been the last year of cladding I'd own one now.

Call it what you want, but it is a truck. In Iowa it is registered as a Sport Utility Truck.

Thanks for the info. It's just not the traditional truck. I don't know about the suspension system But it is the LTZ model which has all the options.

Does it have the airbag leveling suspension? That is one hell of an option to have.

Don't get me wrong I am a full size box guy do not like cute little boxes on a pick up but as far as city boy trucks the avalanche is not a bad truck for getting to the mall or hauling a yearling doe.

It can hold a good amount of food/other stuff from Kroger also, when the wife sends you to pick up her "supplies".

Great for hauling a chair, 1 chair or maybe an end table also:moose:

Ok guys I'm picking up what y'all are putting down. Thanks for the info on what some of y'all refer to as a "city boy truck, baby size bed and plastic trim SUV , TRUCK,CROSS OVER or whatever you want to call it.

Good choice you would have broke all that plastic stuff off had you used it off road or hauling anything.

Despite the already provided opinions, the Avalanche is a good utility truck and you should be happy with it if it suits your needs. Does it have the 4.8L or 5.3l? 2007 is the first year GM started using the 5.3 w/AFM, if you look around, you'll see plenty of them with 200K+ miles. It is a strong engine but in stock form, will leave you wanting more if you tow at all, a tuner will help but necessary. The AFM is a common cause of excessive oil consumption and many GM owners will turn it off with a tuner, I have mine off as well and do not see much if any change in the MPG.
I have never had any issues with a GM truck, but you will hear horror stories about any brand, so knowing the history of the vehicle will help. If it helps put the avalanche into perspective, you are basically buying a Suburban/Silverado or any GM vehicle with a 5.3 with a different body.

That Avalanche has the same frame and drive train as the Silverado and Suburban of the same era. Just a different body style. Have hauled a bunch of various stuff in mine and only plastic that has been broke is the housing for the RF DRL due to a Coyote. 5.3 is decent for gas mileage, averages 16.5, could use a few more ponies when towing but after you learn how to drive it with a bigger trailer it works fine also. Amazing all the names for an Avalanche jealousy will bring out.

Suburban is not a truck either, it's what men drive when their wives don't let them buy a truck. It's not different than driving a station wagon from the 70's or 80's, just bigger. My BIL just got a new one, first thing I said, "Sister would not let you get a truck", him "Yeah, how did you know"

Hey I would take a suburban over the darkest period of life when the option was the minivan.

I have a 2002 Z71, lifted with 37’s on it. I use it to corn my feeders. I beat the snot out of it and run it thru deep water and heavy sloppy Everglades mud. It’s great !
